UGC wants CBSE to continue with UGC-NET CTET twice a year

CBSE told to continue to conduct UGC NET, and CTET twice a year till the proposed National Testing Agency is set up and takes over.

University Grants Commission

Prakash Javadekar, the Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister made it clear, saying a National Testing Agency is being set up by the Government will conduct all these tests.“The CBSE will continue to hold these tests. There will be no changes (in their periodicity). We are hoping to set up the National Testing Agency by next year,” says the Minister as reported by Deccan Herald

Presently, Both UGC-NET and CTET are held twice a year. UGC-NET determines the eligibility of candidates for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor both in Indian Universities and in Colleges, the CTET is conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for teaching jobs in schools.

Sensing less participation from candidates in the bi-annual National Eligibility Test (NET), the government was thinking on holding it once a year. Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar was in favour of the exam being an annual process.

CBSE approached the HRD ministry in 2016 to express its inability to conduct the NET due to the overload of other exams like National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Central Teachers’ Eligibility Test, JEE-Main and the board exams for affiliated schools. CBSE also conducts the class 10 and class 12 board exams due to the absence of any other National Testing Agency.

The official notification for the UGC NET 2017 is expected to be released byCBSE shortly on the CBSE official website cbsenet.nic.in.
