The University Grants Commission has announced a hike in the basic fellowship amount and scholarships with the vision of encouraging research scholars to focus on quality work.
According to a statement by the UGC, starting today the Junior Research Fellowship (JRS) will receive a monthly fellowship amount of INR 25,000 – a stiff 56 per cent hike from the earlier amount of INR 16,000 per month.
Similarly, the Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) scholars will receive a monthly fellowship package of INR 28,000 – INR 10,000 increase from the earlier amount.
The Union Human Resource and Development minister Smriti Irani told the Rajya Sabha that the fellowship amount for JRF and SRF in basic sciences will now be at par with the fellowship amounts offered by the Department of Science and Technology.
The hike for scholars pursuing Humanities and Social Sciences will be 55 per cent. Meanwhile, the Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarships for research and social sciences will be increased to INR 12,400 from the current INR 8,000 in the first two years and then to INR 15,000 from the current INR 10,000 in the third and fourth year.
The PG Scholarship for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering qualified students has also been increased to INR 12,400 a month from the current INR 8,000.
