The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a notification asking schools to lessen the weight of school bags by adopting various measures including lockers in schools and reducing reference books. The CBSE has advised the schools to restrict the number of text books to the prescribed norms of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), particularly at the primary and upper primary levels.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has urged schools affiliated to it to stick to National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks for all classes. The CBSE took this step after receiving complaints from parents that they were pressured by schools to buy an excessive number of textbooks other than the NCERT ones.
Union HRD minister Smriti Irani, who was inaugurating a new Kendriya Vidyalaya building in East Delhi, announced that “All CBSE books to be made available online for free” for the benefit of students and academic schools. The minister revealed that NCERT books have already been made available online for free (in the form of e-books and mobile apps).
University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked the universities to recognize the CBSE offered computer courses for the upcoming session. UGC has taken this step for the students who have studied Informatics practices in class 12th and are facing difficulties in getting admission to undergraduate courses.
The CBSE has decided to discontinue the problem solving assessment tests for classes IX and XI from the academic year 2015-2016.
