Dr Vikram Sharma, Patron, Punjab Private Unaided Dental Colleges Association, said “the Dental Council of India (DCI) doesn’t bar colleges to admit students on the basis of class 12 (medical) marks”.
Apparently, there are few takers of BDS seats as most of the candidates who cleared the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) have already opted for MBBS. As a result, following the first round of counseling, the university conducted a special test on August 24, 2014 to fill the BDS seats that remained vacant. However, that hardly made the situation any better.
“We want the condition of 40% marks in AIPMT to be relaxed so that students belonging to this category do not fail to get the benefit. We have given a representation to the chief minister in this regard and want the proposed counseling from Saturday be postponed till the issue is resolved,” said Ranjit Kumar of Hoshiarpur, as reported by the Times Of India.
On the flip side, the MCI’s decision has brought some relief to the general category students as approximately 94 vacant seats will be effectively converted to this category. As per the prospectus of the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS), Faridkot, only three NRI quota seats have found the requisite takers.
According to reports, of the total 2170 available seats in dental and medical colleges in Punjab, 906 BDS and 122 MBBS have remained vacant. The primary reason behind this is the fact that the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) could not find the sufficient number of eligible candidates despite conducting two rounds of counseling till date.
