Single Engineering Entrance exam (like NEET) for Engineering and Architecture admissions from next year

The central government announced on Friday that admissions to engineering and architecture courses across the country will be made through a single entrance examination from next year. This will do away with the multiple tests conducted by the state governments, central agencies and private institutions.

The single entrance test for engineering admissions will be on the lines of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test which is an All India level examination for medical and dental admissions in India.

However, the admissions to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will be done on the basis of JEE Advanced to be held after the single engineering entrance exam.

Centre announces single entrance exam for Engineering and Architecture courses

HRD ministry has cleared a proposal by the All India Council of Technical Education, the agency which frames the rules and regulations for engineering and other technical institutes in India.

The single entrance test for engineering will be conducted multiple times a year. The HRD ministry has asked the AICTE to issue suitable regulations under the AICTE Act.

The aim of conducting single entrance test for engineering is to enhance the standardization and transparency in the admission process.

Moreover, this will reduce the chances of corruption and commercialization in admissions.

There are more than 3300 approved engineering colleges in India with and an annual intake of 1.6 million students. Every year only half of the seats are filled and half are left vacant. Se Top 100 Engineering Colleges

Presently the admission process for engineering is based on the entrance tests conducted by various agencies in the country.

JEE main is conducted by the CBSE for centre-funded institutions.

The states conduct their own entrance tests while some of them offer admissions on the basis of marks in class 12 exams.  Some private engineering institutions also conduct their own entrance exams.

Some self-financed institutions charge a very high fee and sell the seats in the name of management or NRI quota while some admit students without basic talent or aptitude for engineering.

Most of the engineering pass outs in 2014-15 were not able to meet the expectations of companies offering the jobs.

The HRD ministry has asked for suggestions from state governments and deemed universities for smooth implementation of the regulation.

The ministry may also ask as many institutions to come under the Joint seat allocation system for more efficient and standardized seat allocation process.
