Aadhaar not Mandatory: Supreme Court on its verdict has announced that the Aadhaar, a 12 digits unique identification number is not required for the registration of entrance examinations such as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and University Grant Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC NET).
The court has also stated that the Aadhar number is also not required for taking admission in school which is a huge relief to students and parents. The Supreme Court’s verdict came out while challenging the constitutional validity of Aadhaar.
Earlier, the National Testing Agency (NTA), which has been given with the responsibility of conducting the entrance examinations such as UGC NET, JEE Main and NEET by HRD Ministry, had released a public notice regarding the use of Aadhar in UGC NET/ JEE (Main). NTA had clarified that the Aadhaar number is only one of the types of identification and is not mandatory. According to NTA, ‘Aadhaar is an option but not a compulsion’.
