PGI Chandigarh will be the second medical institute in the country after JIPMER, Pondicherry to start online entrance exam for MD courses from the 2017 session. For the 2016 session, the forthcoming exam will be conducted on December 20. It will be last paper-based entrance examination.
In 2012, the PGI administration had decided to abstain from the paper examination to ensure transparency. The decision came because of the MD entrance exam cheating racket depicted by the CBI. There was mass copying using hi-tech gadgets, and CBI recovered laptops, sophisticated handsets, button-hole cameras and tablet computers from the members of a gang caught up in the scam.
An official of the PGI said that the procedure to follow online entrance exam took a few years before the administration finalized it.
The PGI will accept online application forms and the pattern will be the same as JIPMER. After 2012, the institute installed jammers and employed strict measures for the examination. No complaint of copying has been reported since then, and this time online entrance exam will ensure greater transparency. Moreover, the candidates can take exam from anywhere and there is no need to come to Chandigarh.
