The Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) has accepted the proposal of Odisha government, which stated to provide a university status to Rama Devi Women’s College from 2015-16 session.
“The Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) which is sponsored by the Central government has accepted Odisha government’s proposal regarding this”, said Pradeep Panigrahi (Higher Education Minister) to indiatoday. Panigrahi added that Rama Devi Women College would be the first women’s university in the state.
After upgradation, all women’s colleges under the jurisdiction of Utkal University will come under RD Women’s University.
RUSA has also agreed to give a Cluster University status to Berhampur’s Khalikote Autonomous College. All the colleges that are located nearby the Khallikote College would be considered under the cluster university’s set.
The Center would be releasing a lump sum of Rs 55 crore for each of the universities in the next three years under RUSA.
More new courses will be introduced in these new upgraded universities, decided the state government.
The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) has already sanctioned Rs 31.2 crore for setting up eight model degree colleges in Odisha under the programme. The Ministry has also decided to provide infrastructure grants of Rs 100 crore to Utkal University, Sambalpur University, Berhampur University, Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) and Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT).
