The HRD Ministry made it clear that the non-NET fellowship is not being discontinued. The HRD minister Smriti Irani, who recently met an eight-member delegation comprising of representatives from Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University students union, said that Non-NET fellowship is not being discontinued.
In a meeting held on October 7, UGC had resolved to discontinue the scheme of non-National Eligibility Test (NET) fellowship. The commission had also mentioned shortage of funds as the reason behind scrapping of Non-NET fellowship. Under the existing scheme, students undertaking MPhil and PhD were provided financial assistance at the rate of Rs 5,000 and Rs 8,000 per month respectively. They also got a fixed contingency amount per year to help them fulfill their research.
In order to restore the scheme for fellowships, students union from Delhi University, JNU and other institutions have been regularly protesting in the campuses and in front of the UGC office. A number of students were detained too and the UGC officials had assured a student delegation about reviewing the decision made.
The students chose to continue the protest and organise a strike till their demands were met.
