The central government is planning to come up with new medical colleges in 58 districts of India. The proposed new medical colleges will add 5,800 more MBBS seats in the country. This was informed by the Health and Family Welfare Minister, J P Nadda in the Parliament today.


  • New medical colleges are being established under a centrally sponsored scheme for the ‘Establishment of Medical Colleges attached with existing District/Referral hospitals’.
  • In the first phase, total 58 districts have been identified. This proposal would result in an increase of 5,800 MBBS seats in the country.
  • Under the proposed scheme, districts with hospitals/referral hospitals with bed strength of 200 or more and districts where there is no medical college have been identified.

Nadda also said that the “Government Medical College, Jaipur has been identified for up gradation under phase-IV of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana,”. He further said that the timeline for establishing super speciality block depends upon the receipt of various due approvals of EFC and CCEA.
