Indian Institutes finding a place in the top 100 global universities

Popular education magazines and websites have come up with the new rankings of global universities based on academic curriculum, infrastructure and their ability to churn out scholars who have made it big in different professions. The US varsities have once again topped the list, leaving little scope for India to prove its place among the reputed universities of the world. India has only four entries in the top 100 global universities and just one entry in the top 25.

The top universities in India largely comprised of the Institutes of Technology – the elite group of colleges imparting higher and specialized education in the field of science, engineering and technology. Education Today introduces you to the four institutes that have so far succeeded in showing consistency to excel in every list.

Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai

The Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai is located in the Powai suburb of the city. It is the second oldest of the IIT’s and was established in 1958 with the assistance of foreign players such as UNESCO. Presently, the institute has 14 academic departments, also including a department for humanities and social sciences. It is also one of the top institutes in India imparting research in varied areas of technology that are making significant contributions to the nation. More than 39,000 students have graduated from this prominent center of higher education in the last five decades.

 Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Among the top institutes in India is the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Oldest of the IIT’s, it was founded as an engineering college in the year 1961. IIT Delhi conducts various programs including the Bachelor’s degree in Technology, the dual degree Bachelor cum Master of Technology program and also an Integrated Master of Technology program. The institute scores high in its percentage of staff with a PhD and also for getting strong scores for research papers per faculty. This center of excellence boasts of 13 departments with 11 multidisciplinary centers for research activity. PhD programs are offered in basic sciences such as chemical sciences, biological sciences and physical sciences.

India Institute of Technology, Kanpur

IIT Kanpur was established in the year 1960 with a mission to provide quality education and support the industrial growth of the country. The institute offers a selection of courses in humanities and social sciences and also postgraduate degrees in business and management. The specialty of the institute is that it provides B.Tech programs in Aerospace Engineering, Biological sciences and Bio Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering etc.

University of Delhi

University of Delhi is a center of excellence in research and teaching. It was founded in 1922 and has two campuses in the national capital. The university is known for its rich academic tradition and has made significant contributions to the Indian society. Presently, it has 16 faculties and 86 academic departments. Five departments namely chemistry, geology, sociology and history have been recognized as the Centers of Advanced Studies. There are 77 colleges under the University of Delhi and 5 other renowned institutes spread across the city.
