IIT Kharagpur has snatched the top spot in the recently published EDU RAND ranking to emerge as India’s most ideal destination for engineering education. IITs in Delhi and Kanpur came second and third respectively in that ranking.
The objective behind the EDU-RAND ranking is to guide engineering aspirants as they prepare to get themselves enrolled in their preferred engineering programs. While RAND Corporation is a global research entity with a strong foothold in the education sector, EDU is a community platform for academics, business leaders, and administrators in India’s higher education.
The ranking this year was dominated by the IITs as IIT Chennai and IIT Mumbai secured the fourth and fifth spots respectively. While India is home to over 3,000 engineering institutions, the EDU-RAND ranking covered only those colleges or universities that were established in and before 2009.
IIT Kharagpur was established over six decades back in 1951. It happens to be the first ever IIT established in post-independence India to train young scientists and engineers across the country. Subsequently, it has been recognized by the Central Government as an institution of national importance. Located nearly 120 km west of Kolkata, IIT Kharagpur spans across a campus area of 8.5 square kilometers and hosts as many as 21 hostels.
