The HRD ministry had made the ‘Ashok Mishra Committee’ report public in the month of November for further discussion with stakeholders. The Ministry has received positive feedback for changes in JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) on recommendations of a government-appointed panel. It could lead to major changes in the admission process for IITs and NITs, including the introduction of a compulsory SAT-like aptitude test for aspirants i.e. a single common entrance test.
In 2013, the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) underwent a series of changes, and the then HRD Minister convinced engineering schools to give weightage to Class XII marks. This was done merely to remove the prevalence of coaching classes, but no result could be yielded and, in fact, the coaching industry increased its influence.
Sources said, “Both IITs and NITs are in favour of scrapping the weightage to Class XII marks and conducting a single entrance test for admissions”.
