In what seems to be the first time, 50 per cent weightage will be given to Class XII scores for admission to Engineering colleges in Maharashtra along with performance in the centrally-conducted Joint Entrance Exam (Main). Up till now, engineering colleges in Maharashtra were only looking at marks obtained in Common Entrance Test being conducted by the state. Admission will now be undertaken through the Centralized Admission Process (CAP) which will be giving equal weightage to performances in Class XII examinations and JEE Mains.
While formulating the merit list in engineering colleges in Maharashtra for 2014, equal weightage will be given to the JEE (Main) and PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) scores of students in Class XII. The Class XII scores from different boards will be normalised using a formula devised by the Indian Statistical Institute.
This will be giving the students an edge as there are students who would not have performed well in wither of the exams and hence their performance will be evenly distributed.
Last year, IITs and NITs had taken scores of Class XII into consideration; while the IITs required the student to be in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards, the NITs had given as 40 per cent weightage to Class XII scores.
