Distance programs of 35 varsities under scanner. – Union Grant Commission (UGC) in a circular dated 9th August 2018, has asked several open universities to provide information about the distance programs of professional courses like MBA, MCA, B.Ed and M.Ed. The list of 35 central and state universities’ recognized courses released by the UGC does not include the professional courses offered by Indira Gandhi National Open University or IGNOU and Mumbai University’s Institute of Distance Open Learning, IDOL
UGC has offered a period of 30 days to the universities to submit explanations so as to reverse UGC’s decision to drop the courses. The UGC has decided that these universities which have not been running a similar course for the past five years in regular mode would not be permitted to offer the professional courses in distance mode either.
As per the circular released, UGC further states that the ‘process of recognition of Distance Education programmes of universities submitted applications for recognition for the year 2018-19 and onwards is still on, and so far no open course of applicant universities has been derecognised’
As per the official notification, the list released on 9th August is only of the courses that so far were found compliant with the UGC norms for recognition. Also, the complete list of programme wise recognition status and programme wise deficiency(s) to Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) would be issued by August 16, 2018.
Candidates can check the complete list of ‘recognized courses’ released by UGC on the official website ugc.ac.in for the program offered by distance learning HEIs or Higher Education Institutes.
