The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is planning to have a common entrance test for teachers. The test will be along the lines of the Common Admission Test (CAT), according to Anil Swarup, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy, MHRD.
This test would be to evaluate and set a standard for teachers. It would not be imposing on state governments to use this test as a parameter for employment. They could have their own tests or recruit from this group also who qualifies the test.
Meanwhile, in a proposition to check substandard teachers being pooled into schools through mushrooming teaching institutions across the country, the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) – a regulatory body for school level teachers’ training, has begun to figure out these vague institutions which in many cases offer B.Ed and other certificates courses mostly through affidavits.
