The Centre has decided to put on hold the idea to conduct a single entrance examination for engineering admissions across the country considering the opposition from some states.
Earlier this year, the All India Council of technical Education (AICTE) had decided to conduct a National level entrance examination from 2018 for admission to engineering colleges across the country.
Some states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal do not agree with the idea of single entrance examination. The Ministry of HRD has decided to defer the move till the points of disagreement with the states are sorted out.
The idea of common entrance test for engineering has been put on hold in keeping in view the differences with some states as some of them conduct their own entrance test while some offer admission on the basis of class 12 marks. The center has decided to put the common entrance test on hold till these differences are sorted out.
The move of the common entrance test had been initiated by the HRD ministry on the lines of National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical and dental colleges.
Presently, the CBSE conducts the JEE main for admission to engineering programmes. A number of states conduct their own entrance tests while some consider the Class 12 marks for engineering admissions.
