The last minute decision taken by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to introduce fresh topics in physics for class XII has come as a big surprise for teachers and students; not only because the decision alters the physics syllabus but also because of the short time it leaves the students to prepare.
It would have been easier if that was the only issue the students and teachers were facing; the problem that many are facing is that the changes introduced in the physics syllabus are not yet available with the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) books, which are prescribed by the board itself.
There has been an uproar amongst the teachers as well owing to the last minute changes brought around by these additional sub-topics of theory paper even though the board has made these theory papers available online. Most teachers are also of the belief that theses last minute changes are going to hamper the student’s preparation for the board exams which are not too far off. They said that text of new topics would be hard to obtain for students who have no access to laptops or computers at their residence, reported the Times of India.
Times of India quoted the inputs of some teachers who are of the belief that the change in the syllabus is affecting not only the students but the teachers as well. The changes need to be prepared by the teachers as well before they start off the topics in classes.
However, the CBSE officials have maintained that the subject and topics had already been a part of the announced syllabus. “These sub-topics were included in NCERT books prescribed by the board. Now the contents have been uploaded and made available online to ensure that everyone gets access to the course material. It will also facilitate teachers,” said a board officer.
He also made clear that the prescribed books were already available in the market when these topics were notified.
