The Central Board of Secondary Education has issued guidelines for Open Text Based Assessment for teachers and annual examinations for Classes IX and XI. The teachers instructed that the assessment must be done as a whole considering the application of knowledge gained by the students.
The latest circular from CBSE states that subject teachers are expected to ensure that students read, analyze and discuss the study material regarding the objectives, concepts and application of concepts. The circular clarified that the objective of introducing OTBA was to relieve the students from the burden of mugging up of study material. OTBA will also help the students make effective use of memory and develop the required skills.
CBSE has also made available online text material and asked the teachers to develop more questions based on the given text that require answers through research and application of concepts.
However, the education instructors feel that a robust support and enough training is required for the teachers to change their classroom practices for an assessment system which can transform the education at a secondary level.
