The department of foreign languages was started in 1949 in the University of Pune. Over 1500 students are enrolled every year for the courses offered by the department.
Courses in different foreign languages like French, German, Russian, Japaneseand Spanish are taught at various levels in the department.
German, Russian and French languages are also taught in Postgraduate level of education.
The department offers one-year diploma and certificate level courses.The intensive certificate and intensive diploma courses are of one term tenure.

Certificate course in French:
The basic qualification is SSC/ CBSC/ ICSE examination passed with 10th standard and equivalent qualification is SSC Old (before 1975) with 11th standard passed.
The basic qualification for Intensive Certificate Course in French is SSC/ CBSC/ ICSE examination passed with 10th and equivalent qualification is SSC Old (before 1975) with 11th standard passed.
The Basic Qualification for Diploma in French is a Certificate course or Intensive Certificate course in French from the University of Pune.
The equivalent qualification is HSC (Std.10+2) or FYBA or FY B.Com passed with minimum 70% marks in the subject of French.
OR
Any other Course in French passed with 80% minimum marks from any recognized or institute or University.
The basic qualification is Diploma in French from the University of Pune.
The equivalent qualification is SYBA general with minimum 75% marks in the subject of French / French Special with minimum 60% marks
OR
Course in French with minimum 70% marks & duration 360 hours from any recognized University or institution.
The basic qualification is an Advanced Diploma in French from the University of Pune.
The equivalent qualification is the BA passed with French as a general subject with minimum 70% marks or BA passed with French as a special subject with min. 60% in French.
