CBSE Open Book Exam from 2013-2014 session

CBSE is all set to introduce the “OPEN BOOK EXAM “ for classes IX,  X, XI in 2013 -2014 session and in Class XII from next academic session, reports some section of the media

As per CBSE, The Open Book Tests will test the “higher order thinking skills of students rather than their current reliance on a rote-based methodology”

Formal  announcement with complete details on the new pattern is expected to be made by CBSE  by November / December this year (2013).

See the Video for complete info on CBSE Open Book Exam System:

What is an Open Book Examination?

An “open book examination” is one in which examinees are allowed to consult their class notes, textbooks, and other approved material while answering questions.

(note The system, used in countries such as the US, UK and Canada, follows an analytical question pattern that assesses students’ understanding of a subject than their memory.Candidates are allowed to take textbooks into exam halls but such questions are set to which direct answers will not be found in them ).

Rather than testing your ability to memorize information, open-book exams are designed to test your understanding and ability to synthesize material.

Some Facts about the Open Book Exam System

Open book tests are not easy tests.

Open book tests teach you how to find information when you need it.

The questions are designed to teach you how to use your brain

Most often, the questions on an open book test will ask you to explain, evaluate, or compare things from your text.

CBSE Open Book Exam System

In the CBSE Scheme of things –  students will not be allowed to take books to the exam hall.

This section will carry 20% weight age.

This exam will begin for all subjects in classes IX and X but at the plus two level, only four subjects to start with — Biology, Economics, Geography and a language.
The board has finalized the scheme and the case studies for the final exams will be given to students in November 2013.The question paper will have a separate section carrying a set of problems based on case studies related to the subject. Please note …CBSE will provide case studies related to the subjects four months prior to the examination.

  16. nisha says:

already der s a big confusion in cce pattern. instead of relieving the kids from stress the board has burdened them with more stress in the form of formative assessments. now a new open book system. hm. I don’t know where this will end up. for God sake pls give the kids time to breathe. I think the old system is far far better than these ones. the older cbse system had a power in itself. please don’t spoil that.

  17. ajin antony says:

Really this is the worst of all which cbse has released.Last yrs psa almost half of the school got less than C1.after that they r introducing open book text to again stress the students. The way they takes is not the same opinion of the students.it really stresses the students!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but in other way it is also good…….

  18. nazumiya says:

CBSE plz don’t make the students of the country a dog’s belt. If you really want students improvement, take some groups and experiment on them first ,then on the basis of consequence implement the matter. My gudness ,the new PSA made us sleepless and introducing of new books every year, wt d hell in 9th we had Gulliver’s travel .

  19. shivank says:

we are getting changing patters as slaps on our cheek.it may
adversely affect our result. why we only have to face changing pattern right form cce where teacher can dominate student because of thier personal problem to psa books making our result ugly

  20. raghavi says:

inorder to force a students mind to mug up already most og the cbse students understood the concept to study now cbse has done wonderful thing as a cbse student i am proud to be but i missed the wonderful scheme .i think this way of “OPEN BOOK EXAM” makes a child to think and know how to find a thing which they are in need so,cbse does a reputed job

  21. Maitri manya says:

This is really a hell? Are you torturting us man! Don’t you feel these are children to you. What had happened to you this year 2013_2014.I am telling you if you are not changing ynur rule no one will write board.

  22. sujitha says:

stupid cbse plz dnt put rocks on our head. r playing with our life. thing and do everything .plzzz think u .ur making already to get scoldings from our parents. if this pattern comes we will all get slaps from our parents. plzzzzzzzzzzzz

  24. admin says:

Open book system good but not revolutionary, say schools- Unlike the open book system in the West where students are allowed to take textbooks into the examination hall, the CBSE has proposed to give a set of case studies in each subject. …

  25. SHRUTZ says:

ALREDY V HAD ENOUGH FROM PSA NOW EVEN THIS ITS REALLY GOIN TO STRESS OUT STUDENTS…SUCH SYSTEMS SHOULD START EARLIER NOT IN CLASSES LIKE 10 AND 12 WHERE ITS ABOUT A STUDENTS LIFE

  26. Achu says:

Respected sir-we are the students of 12th of this new batch of 2013-2014 we are realy fedupd by the rule which you are bringing day by day what we the students did wrong to you al?why you al are playing with our life?before 2-3 years cbse had some status he or she who were studied in cbse would get a seat in engineer or for someother else but now they only want the marks they dont want to know weather we are studied in cbse or state now itslf we are in big sad we dont know what to do at that time please dont bring like this new rules ..we the students beggng you to the chairman of cbse please…dont spoil our life..

  27. Ajay yadav says:

    @vijesh

    open exam :
is it compulsory for all students of Class 9, 10, 11 and 12 to give this exam ?

    student :
this is the worst decision and cbse is just teetering on the brink n they have find the students only the cliff hangers to experiment with…

  28. Ankur says:

    @ranveer
    I agree with you
The haramkhor teachers also give good marks to their pet dogs

  29. Cbse student says:

Plz god save to we all cbse is changing rule day by day plz sir dont change the rule atfirst is only nice

  30. virat says:

    but how

  31. parent says:

    To whomever it may concern
9th student still do not have that much maturity to write an open book system exam. Already they are suffering with the PSA, where school is not able to provide any kind of material. They have lost their grades because of PSA. Students will be depressed. There is nothing related to science or social in that exam. It is the aptitute test where they still reqire lot of maturity. Kindly reconsider adding this also to the small kids brains. This way CBSE is discourage children to proceed in CBSE only after 6th.

  32. […] open book system will be for 15-20% of the marks. The schools will be supplied with the text material in few months […]

  33. namrata says:

    @Achu
dear child, read it is not for present 12th standard students…so,do not panic..

  34. dear cbse
pls whatever changes u wnt to introduce do it at grass root level not 9th class.children when exposed to system in lower level get used to it but 9th graders have 100 things in mind.don’t confuse them with experiments.u want to change system and bring western system, there it is done at lower level and children are tuned to system so pls learn something from them and act accordingly.

  35. dear cbse
changes shud always be brought at grass root level.so if cbse wants to introduce open book system then it shud do it in middle school where students are prepared for a system.not at 9th class where children are already worried for their grades .so pls don’t introduce any changes and confuse children anymore

  36. pp says:

when will be for class ix it will be taken and what would be syllabus ? syllabus would be given by cbse only. or different schools can have their own syllabus for each subject ? how many marks per subject ? whats the purpose if books are not allowed in examination hall. If CBSE wants to follow certain IB patterns then they should implement the system fully ? not half of cbse and half o IB system

  37. kavya says:

    its intersting i liked it

  38. athira says:

this is a rubbish and foolish thing done by cbse…

  39. gaurav says:

Firstly psa den value based ques n nw dis open book system.. What is cbse upto??? On one hand, studies hv bcum so easy for classes ix n x due to this home board system n for plus two level, cbse is mkng it ol d more complicated… Due to cce pattern, stdnts get habitual to confined n restricted studies n thus they r nt able to cope wid d syllabus in class xi n nw dis system wil further aggravate their prob..

  40. sneha says:

well I think open book test is not going to be that bad!!!

  41. aarushi says:

    Respected Sir,
Kindly give me proper and full information on all the systems that are applied for this session for class-X.
please send me information fast so that i can be well prepared for my exams.

    Thank you.

and this new examination pattern will confuse the students . man why can,t you be unique copying other countries examination pattern will not make u better so be unique and self made and experiment can be dangerous …

  48. sam says:

i am not interested in open book exam and psa.their Q is very hard.these are very stupid expriment

  49. alya says:

pls do not do this .already psa has led our result down pls dont try to make our result down of 10th too

  50. student says:

cbse schools and rules are like hell they should spoil the childerns life

  51. student says:

this is nothing but playing with a students career, cause its extraburden not only to study the prescribed syllabus but also this extra material. if they dont’ know the meaning of open book test they should not have introduced this at least for class10 and 12. its nothing but a extra waste of time studing things that is irrelevent. now we have to study a lots of referance book to get detailed knowledge of the subjects and don’t even know whatall we have to face while answering. now we have to mug up more sst topics than required. if they had introduced this then this should have been optional………cause its nothing but a confusion to students…

A good system for getting the practicle knowledge!

  69. Jackerlo Fawkes says:

Freaks, I have no idea why you guys hate this system… probably because you are one of those who score the highest marks because you have good memory power. Well I am one of those who likes to understand and study something which will be useful in future. But the previous system.. just made impossible for these children to score because of the ones who just sit whole day in front of books to do the “ratta” thingy and score. ATLEAST, by this new system you guys will use your brain.

And people who say this will increase stress and all that shit, believe me this will lower the overall time you will have to study.. and you will be able to do something part time and get out of your room(for all those kitabi kidas).Gosh, don’t wan’t to sound rude but accept the truth!!

I bet people who score really well(just cuz of ratta), give them a practical thing they have not done before and they will shit their pants.
Being an Indian, I always criticized the Indian education system, BUT this step will surely make changes and help towards a better development of country in long run because people will actually learn to use their brain and think of something innovative.

That’s why country’s like US, UK n all are definitely doing well. Ever seen the (teenage) lifestyle their??

    Think about it!

    BIG UPS FOR THIS STEP!!
I hope this was implemented much earlier but anyways it is now!!!

I THINK THAT FOR THE HIGHER SECONDARY BOOK WRITING COURSE, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ASK THE STUDENTS REGISTERED THAT WHICH STREAM THEY WANT TO CHOOSE, (SCIENCE/ARTS) THEN AFTER THIS, THEY SHOULD BE LET TO WRITE 5 BOOKS CONTAINING THE SCIENCE/ARTS COURSE OF CLASS 9 DURING THE FULL SESSION OF CLASS 9 SA1 AND (2+3) NOVELS CONTAINING THE SAME SCIENCE/ARTS COURSE OF CLASS 9 DURING THE FULL SESSION OF CLASS 9 SA2. AFTER THIS THEIR GURUS WILL CHECK THE BOOKS AND RETURN IT TO THEM, HOWEVER AFTER THIS, THEY CAN PREPARE WHETHER TO PREPARE FOR OTBA OR NOT,
HINT: FOR THE NOVELS, THE CENTRAL CHARACTER MUST BE A SCIENTIST/ARTIST
