CBSE is all set to introduce the “OPEN BOOK EXAM “ for classes IX, X, XI in 2013 -2014 session and in Class XII from next academic session, reports some section of the media
As per CBSE, The Open Book Tests will test the “higher order thinking skills of students rather than their current reliance on a rote-based methodology”
Formal announcement with complete details on the new pattern is expected to be made by CBSE by November / December this year (2013).

An “open book examination” is one in which examinees are allowed to consult their class notes, textbooks, and other approved material while answering questions.
(note – The system, used in countries such as the US, UK and Canada, follows an analytical question pattern that assesses students’ understanding of a subject than their memory.Candidates are allowed to take textbooks into exam halls but such questions are set to which direct answers will not be found in them ).
Rather than testing your ability to memorize information, open-book exams are designed to test your understanding and ability to synthesize material.
Some Facts about the Open Book Exam System
Open book tests are not easy tests.
Open book tests teach you how to find information when you need it.
The questions are designed to teach you how to use your brain
Most often, the questions on an open book test will ask you to explain, evaluate, or compare things from your text.
In the CBSE Scheme of things – students will not be allowed to take books to the exam hall.
This section will carry 20% weight age.
This exam will begin for all subjects in classes IX and X but at the plus two level, only four subjects to start with — Biology, Economics, Geography and a language.
The board has finalized the scheme and the case studies for the final exams will be given to students in November 2013.The question paper will have a separate section carrying a set of problems based on case studies related to the subject. Please note …CBSE will provide case studies related to the subjects four months prior to the examination.
