University of Delhi accepts applications from eligible candidates for PhD Program twice a year for academic and calendar year

DU PhD Admission 2018 Eligibility Criteria

  • A candidate must have obtained a Masters or an M.Phil. degree in Education of the University of Delhi, or any other recognized University to be eligible for admission to the PhD Program
  • She/he must have obtained either a minimum of 50% marks or an equivalent grade in the M.Phil. Degree or a minimum of 55% marks or an equivalent grade in the Master degree
  • Rounding off of fractions is not allowed while computing the percentage of marks of eligibility


  • Reservation of Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) to the prescribed extent shall apply in compliance with the rules notified by the University
  • Supernumerary seats shall be available for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and Foreign Nationals as per the University rules

Common Entrance Test Pattern

  • The test would comprise 50 MCQs each carrying 04 marks with 25% negative marking for each wrong answer; 50% questions would cover Educational Research and 50% questions would cover Foundations of Education


DU PhD Admission 2018 Selection Process

Step 1

  • Candidates who have qualified UGC-ET (including JRF)/ UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ DBT-JRF. ICMR-JRF, DST-INSPIRE or equivalent national level exam/fellowship (as identified by DRC)/GATE/teacher fellowship holder may directly appear for interview(Refer Amendments to Ordinances VI, VI-A &VI-B (M.Phil./Ph.D.) dated 09th Aug2017)
  • The qualifying mark for candidates from the UR category would be 50%, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) would be 45% and there would be no qualifying marks for candidates from SC and ST categories as per GOI regulations
  • The test would be of 200 marks, comprising 50 MCQs each carrying 4 marks with 25% negative marking for each wrong answer
  • The syllabus for the entrance test will consist of 50% questions from research aptitude/methodology and 50% subject-specific questions from the following areas:
  • Philosophy of Education
  • Sociology of Education
  • Psychology of Education
  • Inclusive Education
  • Teacher Education

Step 2

  • An Interview of 30 marks would be conducted in the Department for the following candidates: All the candidates who have cleared the centralized entrance test conducted by the University of Delhi
  • All the candidates who have cleared any of the National level examination (as mentioned above)


  • Each candidate will go through a two-phased interview, one on Research Methodology and the other in the area of specialization. Each phase will have the same marks, i.e. 15. (Total = 15 + 15 = 30 marks)
  • At the time of interview, the candidates will bring a proposal of not more than 1000 words covering the following aspects related to the research interest/area:
  • Area of Research including proposed Title
  • Theoretical/conceptual background
  • Research Gaps
  • Tentative research methodology
  • Contribution to the discipline


DU PhD Admission 2018 Application Procedure

  • Admission to PhD will be done according to the Ordinance VI B of the University of Delhi
  • Please visit the websites of both Department of Education i.e. https://cie.du.ac.in and University of Delhi www.du.ac.in regularly for up to date information
  • All candidates seeking admission to the Ph.D. Program are required to register online on https://du.ac.in
  • Applicants are required to submit a Research Proposal. In case a candidate wishes to apply to both, the MPhil/PhD Programs, then she/he shall fill separate registration forms for each of the two Programs
  • Applicant shall be asked to upload the following items: (i) Passport size photograph of the applicant (maximum size: 50kb; Formats: JPG/ JPEG/ PNG); (ii) Scanned signature of the applicant (maximum size: 50kb; Formats: JPG/ JPEG/ PNG); (iii) Self attested copy of Identity Proof of the applicant (maximum size: 50kb, Formats JPG/ JPEG/ PNG). Identity proof can be any one of the following documents: Aadhar Card, Driving License, PAN card, Voter’s identity card, Passport or College identity card.


Registration Fee

  • Registration Fee (non-refundable) for the written examination is the following:
  • For SC/ST and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) - Rs.250/-
  • For all other categories (Unreserved, OBC etc) - Rs.500/-
  • Registration fee has to be paid during online registration process through one of the available online payment options
