CDS Integrated MPhil-PhD in Applied Economics 2018 - Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Trivandrum invites applications from eligible candidates for admission to full time residential program leading to Integrated MPhil/PhD in Applied Economics Program will commence on 01st August 2018


Course Details

  • Admission to its Integrated MPhil/PhD Program in Applied Economics. The full-time residential program will commence on 01st August 2018. Under the Program, the selected candidates would be on course for a PhD once they complete the requirements of MPhil Course work/ dissertation as stipulated below:
  • The Integrated MPhil/PhD Program at CDS admits students from any discipline
  • The unique aspects of the program are a focus on Applied Economics from a plural perspective and adaptation of effective learning tools

Last Date for Receipt of Application Form: 11th April 2018

Date of Entrance Test: 20th May 2018 (from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon)

Date of Written Test & Personal Interview at CDS Trivandrum on: 02nd July & 13th July 2018

Selected candidates must join the Programme on 01st August 2018

Duration of Course

  • The MPhil Course duration would be of 24-months. Students have to spend at least 18-months, including 12-months on course work and 6-months on the dissertation. Beyond 24-months no further extension will be allowed
  • Coursework, spread over 4 courses in two semesters, comprises modules on quantitative techniques, economic theory and its application to selected economic problems and Indian economy

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates for admission to the MPhil Program shall have a master’s degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or
  • An equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their master’s degree prior to 19th Sept. 1991
  • Eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures

 

Admission Process

  • Statutory Reservations will apply for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) & Person with Disability (PWD) (≥ 40% disability) candidates
  • Foreign nationals and officials nominated by the Govt. of Kerala will be considered separately

 

Selection Process

  • Selection Process will be based on UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of MPhil/PhD Degrees) Regulations of 2016
  • Selection is based on an entrance test and interview. Entrance test is scheduled on Sunday, May 20th, 2018 from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon at Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kozhikode, New Delhi, Pune & Thiruvananthapuram
  • Candidates will be shortlisted for interview on the basis of the Entrance test
  • Interview will be scheduled between 02nd July 2018 and 13th July 2018 at CDS, Thiruvananthapuram
  • No TA/DA will be provided for attending the Entrance Test
  • Minimum Marks to be obtained in the written test and interview taken together in order to be considered for selection:
  • General Category - 40%
  • OBC (NCL) - 36%
  • SC/ST/PWD - 30%
  • Students completing the M.Phil degree with a minimum FGPA of 6.0 (5.5 in case of students from SC/ST/PWD categories) will be admitted to the PhD Program without further screening

Fee Details

  • Tuition Fee: Rs.120/- per semester
  • JNU Registration/Enrolment Fee: Rs.5115/- (one-time fee)
  • All students will be provided Hostel Accommodation on a shared basis. There are hostels for men and women in the campus. CDS hostel rent is Rs.250/- per person per month which includes charges for electricity and water

  • CDS Trivandrum admission application form can be downloaded from Centre for Development Studies Website www.cds.edu
  • Application Fee of Rs.300/- as a DD taken only from State Bank of India (SBI) or State Bank of Travancore (SBT) drawn in favour of the CDS, payable at Trivandrum
  • Application Fee is Non-refundable; for SC/ST &PwD (with ≥ 40% disability) applicants are exempted from payment of the application fee
  • Duly filled application form along with self-attested copies of above documents should be sent to "Academic Program Office, Centre for Development Studies, Ulloor, Medical College P.O,Thiruvananthapuram-695011 (Kerala) with the superscription over the cover ‘Application for Integrated MPhil/PhD Program-2018" on or before 11th April 2018
