India ranked 10th in badminton

India recently achieved the 10th Rank in the Badminton World Federations maiden World Team Ranking. India made the top 10 rank in the first ever qualifying of a nation’s standing on the world stage. China expectedly occupied the top spot while most East Asian countries-Korea (2nd), Indonesia (4th) and Malaysia (6th) as well as Thailand (9th) were ranked above India.

World Cup campaign starts with Sep 2 match: Sabella

Kolkata, Aug 31  New Argentine soccer coach Alejandro Sabella Wednesday said the country’s campaign for the 2014 World Cup will start with the Sep 2 FIFA official international friendly match here with Venezuela.

“Yes, this is my first game in command of the Argentinean national side. Yes, it is the beginning of our journey,” Sabella said, when asked if the much-anticipated match can be called the starting point of Argentina’s World cup campaign.

Sabella also said it was very important for the team to show good results as it would instill confidence among the players.

“Because really it is the beginning of a long trip which I hope would finish with the qualification for the World Cup,” Sabella added

BCCI income rises to Rs.1,667 crore in 2010-11

New Delhi,  The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earned Rs.1,666.84 crore in 2010-11 as compared to Rs.1,387 crore in the previous fiscal, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said Tuesday.

Gross receipt disclosed by BCCI in its tax returns for the assessment years 2007-08 to 2010-11, are Rs.651.82 crore, Rs.1,000.40 crore, Rs.1,387.02 crore and Rs.1,666.84 crore respectively, Mukherjee said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

In view of the commercialisation of the cricketing body, the government has withdrawn tax exemptions provided to the BCCI.

Jamia student to represent India in ‘Little Olympics’

Jamia student to represent India in ‘Little Olympics’

New Delhi,  A student of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has been selected in the ‘Indian Universities Tennis Team’ and will be representing the country in the World Universiade, also known as ‘Little Olympics’, being held in China, an official said.

Parul Goswami is a student of MA Final Year (Convergent Journalism) course at A.J.K. Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) at the university.

According to Jamia, the World Universiade is being held in Shenzen, China from Aug 12 to 23 in which 118 Asian countries are participating in 24 different sports and 306 events.

Tamil Nadu wins K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy

Dinesh Karthik’s unbeaten century (154 not out) enabled defending champion Tamil Nadu to beat Hyderabad by 88 runs in the K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy one-day cricket tournament at Perinthalmanna on February 18, 2011.

Tamil Nadu also retained the title with 22 points after securing five points for the win.

Sehwag to captain Delhi Daredevils

Sehwag to captain Delhi Daredevils

Virender Sehwag will return to lead the Delhi Daredevils in the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League.

The 32-year-old opener had captained the team in the first two seasons, leading them to the semifinals. He stepped down from the post before the 2009 Champions League.

Taylor, Walters to be included in Hall of Fame

Former captain Mark Taylor and middle-order batsman Doug Walters were inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame at Melbourne on February 7, 2011.

The 46-year-old Taylor, who captained Australia in 50 Tests for 26 victories, and the middle-order batsman of the 1970s, Walters, are the 33rd and 34th men added to the group, which began in 1996 with 10 inductees.

JK Tyre on February 11, 2011 announced the launch of a new racing series – JK Racing Asia Series. The championship will run under the patronage of JK Tyre brand but will remain under the management of Motorsport Asia, the biggest motorsport promoter and organiser in the continent.

The JK Racing series will showcase a line-up of drivers from all corners of the world including Asia-Pacific, Europe and Africa.

BCCI insures World Cup for Rs 246 cr

BCCI insures World Cup for Rs 246 cr

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken an event cancellation cover, in addition to one against terrorism, with a total sum assured of Rs 246 crore for the ICC World Cup that begins on February 19, 2011.

The event cancellation cover will insure against any disruption due to adverse weather or non-appearance of a team. The tournament will be held across India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and will end on April 2.
