Mcllroy captures first Major title
The 22-year-old, Ireland’s Rory Mcllroy won his first Major golf title, and became the youngest US Open winner in 88 years. Mcllroy became the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods at the 1997 Masters and the youngest US Open winner since Bobby Jones in 1923. His triumph also marked the fifth Major in a row without an American winner.

Anand wins Leon Masters
World champion Viswanathan Anand won the Leon Masters rapid chess title after defeating Spain’s Alexei Shirov at Leon. This was Anand’s record eighth triumph at the annual rapid chess destination. Anand’s previous triumphs came in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Table Tennis World Championship
China’s Ding Ning and Zhang Jike won the women’s and men’s singles title respectively in the table tennis World Championship in Rotterdam, Netherlands on May 14, 2011. Top seeds Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia from China swept over their teammates Ding Ning and Guo Yan 4-0 to defend their title in the women’s doubles. In mixed doubles, Zhang Chao and Cao Zhen of China beat compatriots Hao Shuai and Mu Zi.

Brazil lifts Under 20 Football World Cup
The 18th FIFA World Under 20 World Cup 2011 tournament was played in Colombia and it was won by Brazil for the Fifth time and the first time since 2003 in UAE. Brazil was defeated by Ghana in the 2009 finals. Brazil is the second most successful team in the junior football world cup as Argentina is the most successful team winning it for the times. The FIFA Under 20 World Cup, until 2005 known as the FIFA World Youth Championship is organized by FIFA. The Championship has been awarded every two years since the first tournament in 1977 held in Tunisia.
A corresponding event for women’s teams, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, began in 2002 with the name “FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship”. The age limit for the women’s competition was changed to 20 beginning with the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship, and the competition was renamed as a “World Cup” in 2007 in preparation for the 2008 event.

Hockey 9s tournament
Australian women hockey team recovered from a goal down to beat India 4-1 in the final of the Lanco International Super Series Hockey 9s tournament in Perth on October 23, 2011. Australia dominated in the early part of the game itself, but it was India that opened the scoring against the trend of play through Soundarya Yendala in the ninth minute. However, Australia struck back through Hope Munro and Kellie White in quick succession and led 2-1 at the break.
Australia made a double when it edged our traditional rival New Zealand by the margin of 5 goals to 3 win the men’s final in the 9s tournament. Indian team which was thrashed by the Australian team in the last league match was forced to play for the Bronze Medal. India went down 1-4 to arch rivals Pakistan in the bronze medal, match to sign off bottom art the heap in the four-nation Lanco International Super Series Hockey 9S on September 23, 2011.

Inaugural Asian Champions Trophy
India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan 4-2 via penalty shootout with two splendid and crucial saves by Goalkeeper S Sreejesh in a nerve-wrecking final to clinch the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament held in September 2011 in Ordos (China).
The status of the Asian Champions Trophy is yet to be defined. It is not on par with the Asia cup or the Asian Games.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2011
On May 15, 2011, World Champion Australia won their sixth Azlan Shah Cup hockey title by defeating Pakistan in Ipoh, Malaysia while India finished at sixth place. Now, Australia has become the most successful team in Azlan Shah Cup followed by India which have won the tournament for 5 times in 1985, 1991, 1995, 2009, and 2010.
In this tournament Great Britain ranked 3rd followed by New Zealand, South Korea, India and Malaysia respectively at 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th place.
In 2010, India and South Korea were declared as a joint winner while in 2009 India defeated Malaysia. Azlan Shah Cup began in 1983 as a biennial contest. The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 is a series of nine tennis tournament that are part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) tour, held annually throughout the year in Europe, North America and (as of 2009) Asia.

The 2010 Davis Cup (also known as the 2010 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas for sponsorship purposes) was the 99th edition of one of the most important annual tournaments among national teams in men’s tennis worldwide was won by Serbia defeating. France 3-2 in the Finals to win its first Davis Cup title and Serbia became the 13th nation in history to win the Cup. It is worth mentioning have that India have never won the Davis cup finals.

US Open 2011
The first four seeded tennis Players Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray reached the semi-finals at US Open 2011. Federer lost against Djokovic in the semifinals and ended-up this Grand Slam year with no Championship Title. This is the first time since 2003, Roger Federer have not won even a single Grand Slam Title in a year. He made it to finals this year at French Open but ended up losing in the finals. Andy Murray was defeated in the semifinals by Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic, completely dominating this year with his third Grand Slam title this year in 2011. Novak Djokovic won his first US Open Singles Grand Slam title after beating Rafael Nadal by 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3-7), 6-1.
Australian Samantha Stosur, who use to appear more in doubles won the 2011 US Open Women’s singles after defeating Serena Williams of USA by 6-2, 6-3. Serena Williams, almost missed the entire Grand Slam season this year made her appearance at US Open but had to return home with the runner-up title.
In the Men’s Doubles Jurgen Melzer (Austria) and Philipp Petzchner (Germany) defeated Mariuz Fyrstenberg (Poland) and Marcin Matkpowski (Poland) by 6-2, 6-3. In the Women’s Doubles Liezel Huber (USA) and Lisa Raymond (USA) defeated Vania King (USA) and Yaraslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan) by 4-6, 7-6, 7-6. In the Mixed Doubles Melanie Oudin (USA) and Jack Sock (USA) defeated Giselew Dulko (Argentina) and Eduardo Schwank (Argentina) by 7-6, 7-6, [10-8].
