Fake currency racket reaches Goa minister’s doorstep

Panaji, Aug 11  An accused in a counterfeit currency racket busted recently was a regular visitor at a Goa minister’s house, police said Thursday.

The accused, a grass-roots Congress worker, Hemant Chodankar alias Chintamani, was a regular frequenter at state Civil Supplies Minister Jose Phillip D’Souza’s house, a senior police officer said.

“Why should I be afraid? I am a political person, so many people come to my house,” D’Souza said.

Anna to meet parliamentary panel, says Lokpal Bill eyewash

New Delhi, Aug 10  Anna Hazare and other civil society activists Wednesday said they would meet a parliamentary panel on the Lokpal Bill in the evening, but expected little from it as the government was not serious about tackling corruption.

“Today’s (parliamentary) standing committee meeting is more of a formality because the bill presented by the government is not worth being discussed and it will only waste the time of parliament,” Arvind Kejriwal, a key member of Team Anna, told reporters.

Indian History Congress organised in Malda

The 71st session of the Indian History Congress (IHC) was organised at the Gaur-Banga University in Malda, West Bengal in from February 11 to 13, 2011. The Congress elected Professor B.B. Chaudhuri general president for the next IHC session to be held at the Punjabi University in Patiala from December 10 to 12.

The sectional presidents elected for the 72nd session are: Professors Ranabir Chakravarti (Ancient India), Pushpa Prasad (Medieval India), N. Rajendran (Modern India), Madhavi Thampi (Countries other than India), and D.P. Agrawal (Archaeology). N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, has been chosen president of the section on Contemporary India.

UP Assembly passes Janhit Guarantee Bill

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly on February 17, 2011 passed four Bills including UP Janhit Guarantee Bill, unveiled by the CM and BSP President Mayawati on her 55th birthday in January 2011.

The Janhit Guarantee Bill promises timely delivery of information and documents like birth and death certificates and revenue records to the people and empowers them to file complaints against officials in case of a delay. The proposed legislation is on the lines of the Right to Information Act.

BJP wins all assembly by-elections in four states

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 17, 2011 made a clean sweep of all the five assembly seats in party-ruled Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand where by-elections were held, while the Trinamool Congress emerged triumphant in one seat in Manipur.

In Jharkhand, Chief Minister Arjun Munda (BJP) defeated the Congress and Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (P) alliance candidate Dasrath Gagrai in Kharsawan Assembly bypoll.
