The Jnanpith Award

The Jnanpith Award

The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary award in India. It is presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded by the Sahu Jain family, the publishers of The Times of India newspaper. The award was instituted in 1961, and its first recipient, in 1965, was the Malayalam writer G. Sankara Kurup.

Any Indian citizen who wrtites in any of the official language of India is eligible for the honor, Prior to 1982, the awards were given for a single work by a writer; since then, the award has been given for a lifetime contribution to Indian literature. Maximum Jnanpith awards have been given for works in Kannada and Hindi (eight each).

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award presented

Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award presented

The PM Dr. Manmohan Singh presented Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award 2008 and 2009 and unveiled the plaque of Jica Assisted Water Supply Project for Guwahati City in Guwahati on February 18, 2011.

The Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Memorial Award for National Integration, instituted by the Assam government was conferred on M. J. Akbar and Hema Bharali for the years 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Namboodiri presented Moortidevi award

Namboodiri presented Moortidevi award

The prestigious Moortidevi award, instituted by the Jnanpith Trust, has been conferred on noted poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboodiri.

Jnanpith laureate M T Vasudevan Nair presented the award to the poet at a function in Thiruvananthapuram on February 12, 2011.

Achrekar wins Sports Illustrated Lifetime Achievement award

Ramakant Achrekar, who had guided Sachin Tendulkar in his formative years, was conferred the ‘Lifetime achievement’ award at the Sports Illustrated India awards function in Bangalore on February 10, 2011.

Lt. Gen. J. S. Aurora conferred “Punjab Rattan” award

Lt. Gen. J. S. Aurora conferred “Punjab Rattan” award

Punjab government on February 9, 2011 decided to confer the “Punjab Rattan” award on the late Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora and Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, for defending the boundaries of our country.

Lt. Gen. Aurora commanded the 2nd Punjab Regiment during the 1947-48 hostilities and saw active action during 1962, 1965 and 1971 operations.

D. Ramanaidu wins Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the Year 2009

Veteran Telugu film producer Dr. Daggubati Ramanaidu, who holds the Guinness Record for making the most number of films, was on September 8, 2010 selected for the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award for the year 2009. Ramanaidu, who is also an actor and a politician, had made 135 films in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, Oriya, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Malayalam, Marathi and Bengali, several of them runaway commercial hits.

Veerappa Moily gets 21st Moortidevi Award

Union law minister and writer Veerappa Moily has been declared the winner of the prestigious Moortidevi Award, considered the most prestigious literary award in the country after the Bharatiya Jnanpith, for his work ‘Shri Ramayan Mahaniveshanam’.   T N Chaturvedi was the chairman of the award selection board. Moily got the 21st Moortidevi Award.
