World Cup campaign starts with Sep 2 match: Sabella
Kolkata, Aug 31 New Argentine soccer coach Alejandro Sabella Wednesday said the country’s campaign for the 2014 World Cup will start with the Sep 2 FIFA official international friendly match here with Venezuela.
“Yes, this is my first game in command of the Argentinean national side. Yes, it is the beginning of our journey,” Sabella said, when asked if the much-anticipated match can be called the starting point of Argentina’s World cup campaign.
Sabella also said it was very important for the team to show good results as it would instill confidence among the players.
“Because really it is the beginning of a long trip which I hope would finish with the qualification for the World Cup,” Sabella added

Sehwag to captain Delhi Daredevils
Virender Sehwag will return to lead the Delhi Daredevils in the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League.
The 32-year-old opener had captained the team in the first two seasons, leading them to the semifinals. He stepped down from the post before the 2009 Champions League.

Taylor, Walters to be included in Hall of Fame
Former captain Mark Taylor and middle-order batsman Doug Walters were inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame at Melbourne on February 7, 2011.
The 46-year-old Taylor, who captained Australia in 50 Tests for 26 victories, and the middle-order batsman of the 1970s, Walters, are the 33rd and 34th men added to the group, which began in 1996 with 10 inductees.

Achrekar wins Sports Illustrated Lifetime Achievement award
Ramakant Achrekar, who had guided Sachin Tendulkar in his formative years, was conferred the ‘Lifetime achievement’ award at the Sports Illustrated India awards function in Bangalore on February 10, 2011.

BCCI insures World Cup for Rs 246 cr
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken an event cancellation cover, in addition to one against terrorism, with a total sum assured of Rs 246 crore for the ICC World Cup that begins on February 19, 2011.
The event cancellation cover will insure against any disruption due to adverse weather or non-appearance of a team. The tournament will be held across India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and will end on April 2.

Pak cricketers charged with corruption offenses
British prosecutors on February 5, 2011 charged Pakistan cricketers Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer with corruption offences and their extradition to the United Kingdom will be sought if they fail to return to this country voluntarily.
The three players along with their agent, Mazhar Majeed, are set to face charges of accepting corrupt payments and conspiracy to cheat, for their alleged involvement in spot-fixing in the Lord’s Test during the team’s tour of England last summer.

Pune cricket stadium to be named after Subrata Roy
The new cricket stadium being built by the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) on the outskirts of Pune is to be named after Subrata Roy Sahara, the Chairman and Managing Worker of the Sahara Group, ICC President Sharad Pawar announced on February 5, 2011.
Originally, the stadium was proposed to be named after Sahara India Group, but since the rules did not permit naming of the stadium after any corporate brand or company, MCA decided to name it after Roy.

India lost the first ODI (One Day International) against hosts South Africa at the Kingsmead stadium in Durban on January 12, 2011 by 135 runs.
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat scoring 289 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 50 overs.

England allrounder Paul Collingwood announced his retirement from test cricket on January 6, 2010.
Collingwood has scored 4,259 runs in 68 test matches at an average of 40 since his debut against Sri Lanka in 2003.
