Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to launch the ” Swachh Bharat Mission “, a campaign to clean India, on Oct 2, 2014 which marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The PM has urged citizens of India to devote at least hundred hours every year, that is two hours every week towards cleanliness.

Modi, in his Independence Day speech, spoke of the Swachh Bharat campaign and called for India to be clean by October 2019, Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary. The Centre will spend nearly Rs 2 lakh crore in the five-year time as part of its ambitious plan to completely clean India by October 2019.

The mission is to be launched simultaneously in all the 6, 50,000 villages of the country. For better results and awareness the Human Resource Ministry has also roped in schools for the purpose.

There are speculations that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and social media giant Facebook might partner with the government on Modi’s Swachh Bharat sanitation drive.

As of now Jammu and Kashmir has been exempted from the mission due to the flood situation there.
