Copa America Football Tournament Winner

Uruguay win Copa America

This year, Uruguay beat Paraguay to win the Copa America football tournament and be crowned South American champions for a record 15th time. Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, selected as player of the tournament.

The Copa America previously known as South American Championship, is an international football competition contested between the men’s national teams of CONMEBOL, the sport’s continental governing body. It is the oldest international continental football competition. The highest finishing member of CONMEBOL has the right to participate in the next edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

People in News – Jagjit Singh

Jagjit Singh

Jagjit Singh, a prominent Indian Ghazal singer, composer, music director, activist and entrepreneur died on 10th October 2011 due to brain hemorrhage. Known as “The Ghazal King”, he gained acclaim together with his wife Indian Ghazal Singer Chitra Singh. He had sung in Punjabi, Hindi. Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali languages. He was awarded India’s third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, in 2003 for his contribution to the fields of music and culture. Jagjit Singh was the first Indian composer, and together with his wife Chitra Singh, the first recording artist in the history of Indian music to use digital multi-track recording for their (India’s first digitally recorded) album, Beyond Time (1987).

Eddie Murphy is an American stand-up comedian actor, writer, singer, director, and musician. He has been chosen to host the 84th Academy Awards/ Oscars in February 2012. The hosting of the Oscars in 2011 by the dramatic actors Anne Hathaway and James Franco had fallen flat with critics and viewers.

In November 2011, it was reported in the media that After Brett Ratner gave up his gig as the producer of the 2012 Oscars, host Eddie Murphy decided to quit too. Ratner, who directed Murphy in “Tower Heist,” resigned from the Oscars after coming under fire for using an anti-gay slur at “Tower Heist” screening.

Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee and the Padma Vibhushan recipient the 78-year old Asha Bhosle on 20th October 2011 entered the Guiness World Records for the most number of single studio recordings. Asha recorded up to 11000 solo, duets and chorus backed songs and several others in over 20 Indian languages since 1947. Apart from Hindi, she has sung in over 20 Indian and foreign languages

Rupert Murdoch and News of the World

Keith Rupert Murdoch is an Australian-American business magnate and he is the founder Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, the world’s second-largest media conglomerate after the Walt Disney Company, the largest media conglomerate in the world in terms of revenue. In July 2011, Murdoch faced allegations that his companies, including the News of the World, owned by News Corporation, had been regularly hacking the phones of celebrities, royalty and public citizens. He faced police and government investigations into bribery and corruption in the UK and US.

The News of the World was a national newspaper published in the United Kingdom from 1843 to 2011. Originally established as a broadsheet by John Browne Bell, the Bells sold to Lascelles Carr in 1891; in 1969 it was bought form the Carrs by Rupert Murdoch’s media firm News Ltd. Reorganised into News International, itself a subsidiary of News Corporation, it was transformed into a tabloid in 1984. News of the World was the Sunday sister paper of The Sun.

Colonel Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi is best known as the de facto leader of Libya from 1969 till his death in 2011. He seized power in a bloodless military coup in 1969 toppling King Idris Which Overthrew the Libyan monarchy and established Libyan Arab Republic and that was the beginning of Muammar Gaddafi’s reign and served as the country’s head of state until 1977, Gaddafi did not have an official title or did not hold any public office since 1977. He was accorded the honorifics “Guide of the First of September Great Revolution of the Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya” or “Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution” in government statements and the official Libyan press.

Steve Jobs

American businessman and inventor Steve Jobs died at his California home on October 5, 2011, due to complications from relapse of his previously treated islet-cell neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer resulting in respiratory arrest. Steve jobs was diagnosed with a rare form of treatable pancreatic cancer in 2003, and underwent surgery. He had a liver transplant six years later with doctors giving him an “excellent prognosis.”

In August this year, Jobs stepped down as the CEO of Apple, making way for Tim Cook to take over.

Big B to confer first Hridaynath Award on Lata

Mumbai, Lata Mangeshkar will on Wednesday be conferred the first Hridaynath Award, a lifetime achievement award instituted to mark her younger brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar entering his 75th year next month, an official said.

The award will be presented by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan in the presence of special guest and film-maker Yash Chopra at Matunga’s Shanmukhananda Hall.

Hridaynath, who was instrumental in forming Hridayesh Arts, a social-cultural organisation 21 years ago, wanted the award to be given to individuals who have reached the summit of excellence in their chosen field and ruled over the hearts of millions, the official said.

India’s core industry growth slumps to 3.5 percent in August

India’s core industry growth slumps to 3.5 percent in August

New Delhi,  The growth rate of eight core industries that include electricity, coal, steel, cement, oil and natural gas, slumped to 3.5 percent in August as compared to 4.4 percent during the same month last year, official data showed Tuesday.

Cumulative growth of eight core industries that has a combined 37.90 percent weight in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), declined to 5.3 percent in April-August period as compared to 6.1 percent during the same period last year, according to data released by the commerce and industry ministry.

Indian IT firms to weather dismal global scenario well

Senior human resource ( HR) managers are of the view that the gloomy global economic scenario will have a limited and short- term impact on hiring in the Indian information technology ( IT) sector as the industry is better prepared to deal with the current slowdown, says a survey by job search portal HeadHonchos. com.

” As many as 62.9 per cent of the respondents do not expect the global economic scenario to impact hiring plans, while 37.1 per cent of HR heads surveyed expect a cut back on hiring,” the survey said.

As a measure of confidence, nearly 92 per cent of the respondents said they believe that the impact will be limited to the next six months and only 8.1 per cent expect any long- term fallout, the survey said.
