Copa America Football Tournament Winner

Uruguay win Copa America

This year, Uruguay beat Paraguay to win the Copa America football tournament and be crowned South American champions for a record 15th time. Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, selected as player of the tournament.

The Copa America previously known as South American Championship, is an international football competition contested between the men’s national teams of CONMEBOL, the sport’s continental governing body. It is the oldest international continental football competition. The highest finishing member of CONMEBOL has the right to participate in the next edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

British Open Championship 2011 Winner

Clarke wins British open

Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke wins the British Open Championship 2011. With this victory, Clarke becomes the oldest winner of the Open Since Argentina’s Roberto de Vicenzo won aged 44 in 1967.

The British Open championship is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. It is the only “major” held outside the USA. It is the third major to take place each year, following The Masters and the U.S. Open.

Youngest Golf US Open winner

Mcllroy captures first Major title

The 22-year-old, Ireland’s Rory Mcllroy won his first Major golf title, and became the youngest US Open winner in 88 years. Mcllroy became the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods at the 1997 Masters and the youngest US Open winner since Bobby Jones in 1923. His triumph also marked the fifth Major in a row without an American winner.

Anand wins Leon Masters

Anand wins Leon Masters

World champion Viswanathan Anand won the Leon Masters rapid chess title after defeating Spain’s Alexei Shirov at Leon. This was Anand’s record eighth triumph at the annual rapid chess destination. Anand’s previous triumphs came in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Bhutia Retires

Bhutia Retires

Arjuna Award and Padma Sri Awardee Baichung Bhutia has announced his retirement from inter-national football but he would continue to play for his club (Sikkim United). He scored 42 goals in 107 international appearances spread over 16 years. He made his debut as a substitute in the 1995 Nehru Cup in Calcutta. He was the most valuable player in 2008 AFC Challenge Cup held in Delhi. When he signed up to play for the English club Bury F.C. in 1999 he became the first Indian footballer to play professional football in Europe. He is also India’s most capped player, and in the 2009 Nehru Cup he received his 100th International cap.

Bhutia was the first Indian Athlete to boycott the Olympic torch relay in support of the Tibetan independence movement.

Table Tennis World Championship

Table Tennis World Championship

China’s Ding Ning and Zhang Jike won the women’s and men’s singles title respectively in the table tennis World Championship in Rotterdam, Netherlands on May 14, 2011. Top seeds Guo Yue and Li Xiaoxia from China swept over their teammates Ding Ning and Guo Yan 4-0 to defend their title in the women’s doubles. In mixed doubles, Zhang Chao and Cao Zhen of China beat compatriots Hao Shuai and Mu Zi.

13th IAAF World Championships

2011 World Championships in Athletics

The 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics took place in Daegu, South Korea from 27th August 2011 to 4th September 2011. US topped the medal tally with 25 Gold followed by Russia, Kenya and Jamaica at 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. China ranked 7 with only 4 medal including one gold. India could not win any medal. Tintu Luka reached the semifinal of the 800m race in which she came 6th and could not qualify for the final although she registered her season’s best timing and qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. Vikas Gowda managed to throw the discus to 64.05m giving him 7th place in the overall discus throw competition. Mayookha johny reached the final of the long jump event.

The official logo of the IAAF world Championship encompasses the new IAAF competition logo and the colourful LOC local Element. Daegu 2011 will be the first-ever IAAF World Championships to use the new IAAf World Athletics Series competition logo.

2018 Winter Olympics

2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang

XXIII Winter, 2018 will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea, between 9th and 25th February 2018. Pyeongchang won the right to host the 2018 Games after winning the majority votes at a International Olympic Committee’s 123rd session in Durban, South Africa defeating Annecy (France) and Munich (Germany) in the bidding process.

Winter Olympics Games will also be the first time the Winter Olympics Games held in Asia (Except Russia) since the 1998 Nagano Olympics. The first celebration of the Winter Olympics which occur every four years was held in Chamonix, France, in 1924 while most recent winter Olympics took place in 2010 Vancouver (Canada), and the next in 2014 will be hosted by Sochi, Russia.

Under 20 Football World Cup

Brazil lifts Under 20 Football World Cup

The 18th FIFA World Under 20 World Cup 2011 tournament was played in Colombia and it was won by Brazil for the Fifth time and the first time since 2003 in UAE. Brazil was defeated by Ghana in the 2009 finals. Brazil is the second most successful team in the junior football world cup as Argentina is the most successful team winning it for the times. The FIFA Under 20 World Cup, until 2005 known as the FIFA World Youth Championship is organized by FIFA. The Championship has been awarded every two years since the first tournament in 1977 held in Tunisia.

A corresponding event for women’s teams, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, began in 2002 with the name “FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship”. The age limit for the women’s competition was changed to 20 beginning with the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship, and the competition was renamed as a “World Cup” in 2007 in preparation for the 2008 event.

Hockey 9s tournament

Hockey 9s tournament

Australian women hockey team recovered from a goal down to beat India 4-1 in the final of the Lanco International Super Series Hockey 9s tournament in Perth on October 23, 2011. Australia dominated in the early part of the game itself, but it was India that opened the scoring against the trend of play through Soundarya Yendala in the ninth minute. However, Australia struck back through Hope Munro and Kellie White in quick succession and led 2-1 at the break.

Australia made a double when it edged our traditional rival New Zealand by the margin of 5 goals to 3 win the men’s final in the 9s tournament. Indian team which was thrashed by the Australian team in the last league match was forced to play for the Bronze Medal. India went down 1-4 to arch rivals Pakistan in the bronze medal, match to sign off bottom art the heap in the four-nation Lanco International Super Series Hockey 9S on September 23, 2011.
