National Sports Awards

The Government has announced the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chnad Awards and Dronacharya Awards for the year 2011. The Selection Panel for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award was headed by ShriDinesh Khanna, for Dronacharya Award it was headed by Shri Satpal and for Dhyan Chand Award it was headed by Secretary (Sports).

National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which was established in 1991-92 is given for a spectacular performance in the year under consideration which also considered as the highest sports award in India;

Kabaddi World Cup 2011

Kabaddi World Cup 2011

In Pearls Kabaddi World Cup 2011, India defeated Canada and showed his monopoly in the final by winning the world cup consecutively fourth time. It was the fourth edition of the circle style Kabaddi world Cup. A total of 14 teams took part in this tournament. Kabaddi World Cup was first played in 2007 and 2010. So far India is the unbeaten champion in Kabaddi World Cup. Iran is the next most successful nation being twice runner-up.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy is given to the best University for its sports achievements in an academic year, was not presented for the first time in 54 years since its inception, as the Assocaition of Indian Universities (AIU) has reportedly failed to finalise the winner.

LG ICC Awards 2011

The eigth LG ICC awards ceremony was held in London, England on 12 September 2011. The ceremony features 10 individual awards that over the years have honoured some of the biggest names in men’s and women’s international cricket and will be voted upon by a strong panel of former players, respected members of the media and an elite umpire and match referee. International Cricket Council has been hosting ICC Awards since 2004 and now is in its eigth year. The earlier ceremonies were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005), Mumbai (2006), Johannesburg (2007, 2009), Dubai (2008) and Bengaluru (2010).

India ranked 10th in badminton

India ranked 10th in badminton

India recently achieved the 10th Rank in the Badminton World Federations maiden World Team Ranking. India made the top 10 rank in the first ever qualifying of a nation’s standing on the world stage. China expectedly occupied the top spot while most East Asian countries-Korea (2nd), Indonesia (4th) and Malaysia (6th) as well as Thailand (9th) were ranked above India.

Apart form being awarded with ‘Best boxer’ title, boxer Pinki Jangra (51 kg) was the sole Indian pugilist who bagged the Gold medal at the Arafura Games held in Darwin, Australia from May 7-14, 2011. On the other hand, male boxers Vijendra Singh (81kg) and Akhil Kumar (56 kg) settle for bronze medals after losing in semifinals.

Copa America Football Tournament Winner

Uruguay win Copa America

This year, Uruguay beat Paraguay to win the Copa America football tournament and be crowned South American champions for a record 15th time. Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, selected as player of the tournament.

The Copa America previously known as South American Championship, is an international football competition contested between the men’s national teams of CONMEBOL, the sport’s continental governing body. It is the oldest international continental football competition. The highest finishing member of CONMEBOL has the right to participate in the next edition of the FIFA Confederations Cup.

British Open Championship 2011 Winner

Clarke wins British open

Northern Ireland’s Darren Clarke wins the British Open Championship 2011. With this victory, Clarke becomes the oldest winner of the Open Since Argentina’s Roberto de Vicenzo won aged 44 in 1967.

The British Open championship is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. It is the only “major” held outside the USA. It is the third major to take place each year, following The Masters and the U.S. Open.

Youngest Golf US Open winner

Mcllroy captures first Major title

The 22-year-old, Ireland’s Rory Mcllroy won his first Major golf title, and became the youngest US Open winner in 88 years. Mcllroy became the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods at the 1997 Masters and the youngest US Open winner since Bobby Jones in 1923. His triumph also marked the fifth Major in a row without an American winner.
