National Sports Awards
The Government has announced the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Awards, Dhyan Chnad Awards and Dronacharya Awards for the year 2011. The Selection Panel for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award was headed by ShriDinesh Khanna, for Dronacharya Award it was headed by Shri Satpal and for Dhyan Chand Award it was headed by Secretary (Sports).
National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which was established in 1991-92 is given for a spectacular performance in the year under consideration which also considered as the highest sports award in India;

Kabaddi World Cup 2011
In Pearls Kabaddi World Cup 2011, India defeated Canada and showed his monopoly in the final by winning the world cup consecutively fourth time. It was the fourth edition of the circle style Kabaddi world Cup. A total of 14 teams took part in this tournament. Kabaddi World Cup was first played in 2007 and 2010. So far India is the unbeaten champion in Kabaddi World Cup. Iran is the next most successful nation being twice runner-up.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy is given to the best University for its sports achievements in an academic year, was not presented for the first time in 54 years since its inception, as the Assocaition of Indian Universities (AIU) has reportedly failed to finalise the winner.

India ranked 10th in badminton
India recently achieved the 10th Rank in the Badminton World Federations maiden World Team Ranking. India made the top 10 rank in the first ever qualifying of a nation’s standing on the world stage. China expectedly occupied the top spot while most East Asian countries-Korea (2nd), Indonesia (4th) and Malaysia (6th) as well as Thailand (9th) were ranked above India.

Arafura Games 2011
Apart form being awarded with ‘Best boxer’ title, boxer Pinki Jangra (51 kg) was the sole Indian pugilist who bagged the Gold medal at the Arafura Games held in Darwin, Australia from May 7-14, 2011. On the other hand, male boxers Vijendra Singh (81kg) and Akhil Kumar (56 kg) settle for bronze medals after losing in semifinals.

Bhutia Retires
Arjuna Award and Padma Sri Awardee Baichung Bhutia has announced his retirement from inter-national football but he would continue to play for his club (Sikkim United). He scored 42 goals in 107 international appearances spread over 16 years. He made his debut as a substitute in the 1995 Nehru Cup in Calcutta. He was the most valuable player in 2008 AFC Challenge Cup held in Delhi. When he signed up to play for the English club Bury F.C. in 1999 he became the first Indian footballer to play professional football in Europe. He is also India’s most capped player, and in the 2009 Nehru Cup he received his 100th International cap.
Bhutia was the first Indian Athlete to boycott the Olympic torch relay in support of the Tibetan independence movement.

Indira Goswami
She was an assamese editor, poet, professor, scholar and writer also called Mamoni Baideo, died recently. She was the winner of the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Jnanpith Award and was also India’s first Principal Prince Claus Laureate. She was noted for her novels which include The Moth Eaten Howdah of a Tasker, Pages Stained with Blood and the Man from Chinamasta.

Bhupen Hazarika
Being a singer, poet, music director and lyricist, he was a doyen in Indian Music. He hailed from Assam and is known for writing strong lyrics with themes of communal harmony, universal justice and empathy. He was awarded with many awards and accolades notable being Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Academy Award and Dada Sahib Phalke award. He died recently due to multiple organ failure.

Shanti Tigga
35-year-old Sapper Shanti Tigga joined the 969 Railway Engineer Regiment of Territorial Army (TA) becoming the first woman jawan. “Women are allowed to join the armed forces only as officers in the non-combat units. But Tigga has earned the unique distinction of being the first lady jawan in the 1.3 million strong defense forces. Employed with the Railways as a points-man and posted at Chalsa station in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri ditrict, Tigga volunteered for the TA last year.

Ustad Azizuddin
Music maestro Ustad Azizuddin Khan Affectionately called Baba among his disciples passed away recently. He was an illustrious member of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. Some of his noted disciples include Malikarjun Mansur, Dhondutai Kulkarni and Shruti Sadolikar-Katkar.
The Jaipur-Atrauli gharana is a khayal-based stylized singing school founded by his grandfather Alladiya Khan in the late 19th Century. It is an offshoot of the Agra gharana. It gained prominence in the early half of the 20th Century.
