Awards this Month December 2009 India – “Polio Championship Award National Innovation Foundation (NIF), Maulana Abul Kalam award, President of the Press Association for 2009-10, Bharat Muni Samman, e UNICEF Award for HIV/AIDS Journalism, 2009

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was on December 6, 2009 conferred with the “Polio Championship Award” by the International Polio Plus Commission of Rotary International for his “great support and encouragement” in endorsing polio immunization for the children of Bihar.

The National Innovation Foundation (NIF), set up by the Department of Science and Technology, has selected Agriculture Correspondent of The Hindu M.J. Prabhu for its media award for popularising grass-roots innovations through the Farmers’ Notebook column of the newspaper. The former Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, R.A. Mashelkar, is the Chairperson of NIF.

Writer Iqbal Mateen will get this year’s Maulana Abul Kalam award of the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy for his contribution to Urdu literature. It carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh. The Amir Khusrau Award, carrying a cash reward of Rs. 1.5 lakhs, will be given to Bekal Utsahi while five other awards of Rs 1 lakh each will be given to Masror Jahan, Hanif Tareen, Sajida Zaidi, Mohd Ishaq Siddiqui and Fazal Husnain. Premchand Award, carrying a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh, will be given to Pradeep Jain of Muzaffarnagar.

K.V. Prasad of The Hindu was chosen as President of the Press Association for 2009-10 at an election held in New Delhi on December 12, 2009. The other office-bearers elected are Rajiv Ranjan Nag of Mahanagar daily as general secretary, Anil Anand of DNA as vice-president, and Manan Kumar of New Indian Express as joint secretary. Abhijit Roy Chowdhury of Jagran was elected as treasurer.

Kathak’s leading exponent Birju Maharaj would be conferred the Bharat Muni Samman for the year on December 17 in Bhubaneshwar during the valedictory ceremony of the Bharat Muni national dance festival. The annual award was instituted last year by city-based Odissi dance institution Kalingayana Touryatrikam.

Scientist Yash Pal and Project Director of Chandrayaan-1 M. Annadurai have been chosen for the H.K. Firodia awards for 2009. Former winners of the award include A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, M.S. Swaminathan, Jayant Narlikar and Samir Brahmachari.

Narayan M. Bhat, Programme Executive, All India Radio, Karwar, has been selected for the UNICEF Award for HIV/AIDS Journalism, 2009 for his article on HIV/AIDS published in Lokadhwani.
