Gallantry awards: President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has conferred eight Kirti Chakras, one Bar to Shaurya Chakra and twenty five Shaurya Chakras to serving armed forces personnel and others for displaying conspicuous gallantry, indomitable courage and extreme devotion to duty. Besides fifteen Param Vishisht Seva Medals, two Uttam Yudh Seva Medals, one Bar to Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and twenty five Ati Vishisht Seva Medals were conferred on defence personnel for distinguished service of an exceptional order at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Mar 27.

Commonwealth writers’ prize: Mumbai-born Indra Sinha on March 13 won the best book award for his vivid portrayal of the tragic 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, in the Europe region category of the Commonwealth writers’ prize 2008

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awards: The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards for 2007 went to 11 scientists, including Narayanaswamy Srinivasan, Upinder Singh Bhalla, Amalendu Chandra, A. Ajayaghosh, Rama Govindarajan, B.V. Rajarama Bhat.

The 2008 award went to 10 scientists, L.S. Shashidhara, Jarugu Narasimha Moorthy, P.N. Vinayachandran.

The prime minister also gave away the CSIR award for science and technology innovations for rural development. For 2007, the award was conferred jointly on the National Research centre on Yak (NRC-Yak) in Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh for ‘improvement of sustainable Yak husbandry practices in the Himalayan Region’.

The CSIR award for 2008 jointly went to Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute (CSMCRI) in Bhavnagar in Gujarat and Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) in Lucknow

The CSIR Diamond Jubilee technology award 2007 was given to Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) limited for ‘development and commercialization of Scorpio’.

Sahitya Akademi awards: Seven novelists are among the 21 literatures who were on Dec 23 chosen for the National Sahitya Akademi awards for this year. Six poets, five short story writers and three critics were also selected for the coveted award.

K.P. Appan, a well-known critic who died recently, won the award for his collection of essays in Malayalam, ‘Madhuram Ninte Jeevitham.’ Kashmiri writer Nabi Aatash and Sindhi writer Hiro Shewkani, both critics, also won the award. Another prominent winner is Hindi novelist Govind Mishra, who got the award for his novel, ‘Kohre Mein Kaid Rang’.

The novelists who were selected for the award are: Rita Choudhary (Assamese), Vidya Sagar Narzary (Bodo), Srinivas B. Vaidya (Kannada), Ashok Kamat (Konkani), Shyam Manohar (Marathi) and Mitter Sain Meet (Punjabi)

Sarat Kumar Mukhopadhyay (Bengali), Champa Sharma (Dogri), A.O. Memchoubi (Manipuri), Pramod Kumar Mohanty (Oriya), Om Prakash Pande (Sanskrit) and Jayant Parmer (Urdu) were the poets selected for the award.

Among short story writers, Suman Shah (Gujarati), Shri ‘Kirat’ (Nepali), Dinesh Panchal (Rajasthani), Badal Hembam (Santhali) and Melanmai Ponnusamy (Tamil) were the winners.
