SCOUTING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Graduate scholarships in reproductive health law is awarded annually to students pursuing the degree of Master of Law (LLM) or Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) at the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto. The scholarship is designed to enable graduates from Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, the Carribean, Asia or Central and Eastern Europe who have an interest in human rights and women’s health in their own countries to explore the legal and ethical issues in reproductive and sexual health. The scholarship covers tuition fees, an annual stipend of approximately CDN $ 12,000 and stipend to enable the recipient to undertake an internship directly related to their graduate research.
Last day for submission of application is February 1 of each year.

- Graduate Scholarship in Women’s Rights is awarded annually to students pursuing the degree of Master of Law (LLM) or Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) at the faculty of Law, University of Toronto. The scholarship is designed to enable law graduates from developing southern countries who have an interest in human rights of women to explore the legal protection and promotion of the human rights of the women to explore the legal protection and promotion of the human rights of the women at national, regional or international levels. One award of approximately CDN $ 20,000 was available for 2001. Additional awards will be available in future years. Deadline for application is February 1, of each year.

- Giulia Mereu Scholarship is awarded annually to full-time postgraduate students in the LLM Course in International Human Rights Law at the University of Essex ( www.essex.ac.uk). This scholarship has been established by the family and friends of Giulia Mereu who lost her life at the age of 26, while monitoring human rights violations in the former Yugoslavia. She had been an Intern with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The aim of the scholarship is to enable those who might otherwise not be able to study the discipline of human rights to do so and to ensure that Giulia Mereu’a ideals live on. This scholarship, covers tuition fees for the academic year as well as modest allowance to enable the recipient to undertake one-month internship with a human rights organisations.

- Summer institute on human rights American University, Washington, DC and Amnesty International-USA co-sponsor a summer institute on human rights for third and fourth year university students, graduate students and other interested adults. The internship programme spans the two sessions. Students may earn upto a15 credit hours from the internship, seminars on human rights (an introductory seminar and an advanced topic seminar) and skills mini-courses (managing a human rights NGO, legislative advocacy and grassroot advocacy). A limited number of scholarships are available on a competitive basis.

- Summer Course in Human Rights at the University of Human Rights, Maastricht, The Netherlands, Leuven, Belgium.
Course: Will focus on monitoring mechanisms at global and regional level. Course begins on August 21 and countinues to September 1, at the end of which a certificate of attendance will be given. A degree in Law or Social Sciences, some preferable academic or practical experience in Law/Human Rights. The course fee would amount to NLG 2.500 (EURO1.135) which includes accommodation, lunches, excursion and written material. Scholarship is available for European community only or European Union members.
