JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
(i) ICMR in collaboration with PGI, Chandigarh holds a national level examination on a date of April for determining the eligibility of Indian national candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) through Indian Council of Medical Research. The award of Junior Research Fellowship to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding placement in a medical college/hospital/university/national laboratory/institution of higher learning and research as applicable.
- A total of 100 Fellowships would be awarded. Eighty fellowships would be awarded for work in the field of biomedical sciences with emphasis on life sciences (like microbiology, physiology, molecular biology, genetics, human nutrition, human biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biophysics, immunology, Zoology, botany, veterinary sciences, etc.). Twenty fellowships would be awarded for work with emphasis on social sciences like psychology, sociology, home science, biostatistics, environmental sciences, anthropology, home science, biostatics, environmental sciences, anthropology, etc.
- Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for life sciences and the second of those candidates qualifying for social sciences, will be made on the basis of their performance in the above Test.
- The candidates selected for the JRF programme of ICMR would be permitted to enroll themselves for the Ph.D programme of any University. However, the JRF programme would not have any connection with the Ph.D programme.
- Another 100 candidates would be selected for consideration for positions of JRF under various research schemes of ICMR (Subject to fulfilling the conditions for appointment under the schemes) for the duration of that scheme. These JRFs would also be permitted to complete Ph.D while working in the scheme, if enrolled.
- SC/ST applicants will be given such special considerations as per policy guidelines of the council.
- The successful candidates would be notified by post by the end of June.
- Value of Fellowship: Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF will receive fellowship from ICMR.
- The value of the fellowship is at present Rs. 5000 (Rupees five Thousand only) per month. It will be revised from time to time as decided by the Council.
- The duration of fellowship will initially be limited till three years carrying a monthly stipend of Rs. 5000 and an annual contingency grant upto Rs. 7,500 per annum. The progress of research work would be evaluated annually through annual progress reports. On completion of two years as JRF the stipend of a fellow may be increased to Rs. 5600 p.m. for 3 rd year on the basis of assessment of candidate’s research progress/achievements. Upon such a recommendation, the fellow will be called SRF. In the event of the committee not recending upgradation, the fellow will continue as JRF with a stipend of Rs. 5000 per month for the 3 rd year or his/her fellowship may be terminated depending on the decision of the Committee. The duration as SRF may be for a maximum duration of 2 years. Thus, the, total tenure as JRF plus SRF shall not exceed 4 (four) years.
- The selected candidates may join on fellowship within two years after declaration of the result.

- Subjects of Test and Conditions of Eligibility:
- The Test will be held in the following stream: 1. Aptitude test (common for all) 2. Life Sciences 3. Social Sciences. Subjects covered under life sciences include microbiology, physiology, molecular biology, genetics, human nutrition, human biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biophysics, immunology, zoology, botany, veterinary sciences. Subjects covered under social sciences include psychology, sociology, home
Science, biostatistics, environmental sciences, anthropology.
- Educational Qualification: M.Sc or equivalent degree with minimum 55% marks for General candidates and 50% for the SC/ST & OBC candidates in the subjects mentioned under item 3(i).
- A candidate who is appearing/has appeared in the final year (IV/VI Semester whichever is applicable and final year where Semester system is not there) of M.Sc Equivalent Examination during the academic session can also apply for the Test as RA (Result Awaited). Such candidates will heave to submit the attestation format (given in the end of application) duly certified by the Head of the Deptt./In Institute over his/her signature and rubber stamp (with address an name) where he/she is appearing in the final year examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Test year examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Test provisionally and shall be considered eligible for JRF only after they submit the proof of having passed the Master’s Degree examination with at least 55% marks in case of candidates belonging to General Categories & OBC in the relevant related subject. The M.Sc or equivalent degree mark-sheet must be submitted to ICMR, latest by a equivalent degree mark-sheet must be submitted to ICMR, latest by a date of September, otherwise candidature will automatically be forfeited.
- Age limit: The age limit for admission to the eligibility Test is 28 years as on a date in September (upper age limit relaxable upto 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, Physically handicapped and female applicants).
Scheme and Date and Place of the Test:
Date of Test: Tentatively Test will be held on a date of April.
Place of Test: The Test would be conducted at Chandigarh, Chennai and Delhi. The candidates are to indicate their choice of centre for examination. In case there are less number of candidates in a particular centre, those who opted for that centre are liable to be shifted to another centre. No change of examination centre is allowed. In case the candidate fails to mention his/her examination centre, his/her application will be summarily rejected without any correspondence.
Scheme of Test: The test will consist of one paper of 2 hours duration. The paper will consist of 2 Sections. The Aptitude Section (Section A) will have 50 questions on (i) scientific phenomenon in everyday life; (ii) general knowledge in sciences; and (iii) common statistics. All these questions would be compulsory with each question carrying 1 mark.
The Subject Specific Section (Section B & C) would pertain to (B) Life Sciences and (C) Social Sciences. The candidate may attempt questions in either of the two areas. Each area of Section B & C would have 100questions and the candidate may attempt any 75 questions in the pre-designated area of Section B or C. Candidates are reaquired to indicate the option for section B or C in the application too.
Each question carries one mark. Negative marking will be made for each of the wrong answer. The questions in both the sections would appear in English only.
The final result will be based on aggregate of marks obtained in both the sections for general category 55% & 50% for SC/ST/OBC.
- Level of the Test: The test would be of M.Sc. level.
- Examination Fee: (i) Candidates applying for the Test are required to pay a fee as specified below:

(ii) Mode of Payment of Fee: A single crossed Bank Draft preferably from SBI valid for six months, drawn in favour of the “Director, PGI. Chandigarh” payable at Chandigarh and should be security attached on top of application. Payment of fee in any other mode shall not be accepted.
Candidates should write his/her name, date of birth, address, date of exam. and his/her particulars on the back of the Demand Draft so that if can be matched with the application if it gets detached accidentally from the candidates should check that it bears the code number of issuing bank, and drawer bank; and also amount and signatures of issuing authority.
(iii) Candidates seeking Free-concession.
- A SC/ST/OBC candidate should submit a copy of the caste certificate about being SC/ST/OBC (attested by a Gazetted Officer) issued by the prescribed authority of Govt. of India, in English or Hindi. In case the caste/category certificate is in regional language the candidate should enclose as English/Hindi translation of the same duly notarized by a notary. For allowing concessions in this regard ICMR follows only Central Govt. lists and not State Govt. list.
The SC/ST/OBC candidate should ensure from the competent authority issuing the caste certificate that their communities are enlisted in the common list of the Government of India.
- A physically handicapped person should submit along with his/her application a copy of certificate about being handicapped obtained from a government Hospital/Medical Board duly attested by the gazetted officer.
- An applicant claiming fee concession (and received by the ICMR within the closing date) but without an attested copy of valid SC/ST/OBC/PH certificate, will be summarily rejected.
Application fee paid for a particular examination will neither be adjusted for any subsequent examination nor refunded under any circumstances.
- How to Apply: Candidates seeking admission to the Test must apply in the prescribed application form given in the advertisement. The application form may either be cut from the Employment News or copied from it or neatly typed on white paper (A-4 size) in double space and on one side of the paper only used.
The application form should be filled in by the candidate legibly and carefuly, in his/her own handwriting with ball point pen.
- Enclosures to be Attached with the Application:
- Single Crossed demand draft for prescribed amount in favour of Director, PGI payable at Chandigarh.
- Attested copy of the Matric/Higher Secondary Certificate showing Date of Birth.
- Attested copy of Marks statements of the M.Sc examination. If appearing in M.Sc final year examination/semester examination, the certificate to this effect from the Principal/Head of the Department concerned.
- Attested copy of Character/Conduct certificate from the Institute last attended.
- Attested copy of SC/ST/OBC/PH certificate.
- A self-addressed postcard for acknowledgement mentioning ICMR (JRF Exams.) on month and year.
- One Passport size photograph pasted on the application form duly attested by Gazetted Officer.
- Three self-addressed envelopes of size 10 cms * 23 cms with six rupees postal stamps.
- Last Date: The application form, duly completed with requisite enclosures, must reach the Registrar, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh-160012 by registered/speed post on or before a date of February. For candidates from Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Ladakh Division of J & K state, Lahul & Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Island and Lakashdeep the application must reach on or before a date of March. The envelope containing the application (with enclosures) should be superscribed as under:
“Application for ICMR JRF Test Subject Life Science/Social Science.” The candidates are advised in their own interest to apply early enough to ensure timely receipt of their applications.
Last date for sending applications is a date of February.
