RESEARCH AWARDS (FOR Ph.D) IN MATHEMATICS

 

 

The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) invites applications for the grant of Research Awards to students for pursuing studies for Ph.D. degrees in Mathematics.

Eligibility: Applicants should be motivated students with a good Master’s degree in Mathematics. Students having a Master’s degree in Statistics or Physics may also apply provided they have a very good background in Mathematics as indicated by the course taken by them as also by the testimonials submitted. Students who have appeared for Master’s degree examination in the year when this award is given may also apply.

Applicants should be below the age of 25 years as on a date of January. Exceptional cases will, however, be considered on merit.

 

Amount of Scholarship: Research awardees will be paid Rs. 5,400 per month during the first two years. The scholarship amount may be increased to Rs. 6,000 per month at the end of the second year after an evaluation of the progress of the awarded by the Board. A contingency grant of Rs. 5,000 per annum will be given.

Selected students would enroll themselves with an appropriate institution to work/study towards a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics. The scholarships will be paid through the institution which they join. The awards are sanctioned for one year at a time and are renewable at the end of each year subject to satisfactory progress upto five years. Selection will be made on the basis of a written test and interviews to assess the aptitude of the applicants.

Applications in duplicate along with a recent passport size photograph should be made in the proforma given at the end of the published advertisement and sent to the address given below. The envelope should be marked, “NBHM Research Awards”. Candidates for Research Awards should specify on the envelope their area of interest (Pure Mathematics/Applied Mathematics/Statistics/Mathematical Physics). The applicants should arrange for letter of recommendation from three experts/teachers to be sent directly to the address appearing below, with the same markings.

A self-addressed post card/stamped envelope should accompany the application for acknowledgement of receipt.

The last date for the receipt of completed applications is April.

Candidates called for written test/interview will be paid Railway fare limited to sleeper class (Second class) each way and a sum of Rs. 50 as Halting Allowance for the day of test/interview.
