State Eligibility Test (SET) for Lectureship, August – 2011

Last Date for the receipt of duly filled in application form is 14-06-2011. Candidates should submit their application form only to The Secretary, SET, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore-641046.
1. The University will hold the State Eligibility Test (SET) on Sunday, 14th August 2011 for determining the eligibility of Indian Nationals for recruitment of Lecturers in Universities and Colleges in Tamil Nadu & Union Territory of Puducherry in the subjects listed in item No. 7 at the centers listed in item 8 below.
2. Eligibility Conditions
(i) Only those Candidates who have completed / are pursuing PG degree are eligible to appear in SET. Other need not apply.
(ii) Candidates who have secured atleast 55% marks (without grace or rounding off) in Master’s Degree (or) equivalent examination are eligible for this test. The Scheduled Caste (SC) / Scheduled Tribes (ST) / Physically Challenged (PC) / Visually Challenged (VC) category candidates who have secured atleast 50% marks (without grace or rounding off) in Master’s Degree Examination are eligible for this Examination.
(iii) Candidates who have appeared (or) will be appearing at the qualifying Master’s Degree Examination and whose result is still awaited (or) candidates whose examinations have been delayed may also apply for this test. However, such candidates will be admitted provisionally and shall be considered eligible for award of Lectureship eligibility only after they have passed their Master’s Degree examination (or) equivalent with atleast 55% marks (50% in case of SC/ST/PC/VC category candidates). Such candidates must obtain their P.G. degree Marksheet within two years from the date of SET result with required percentage or marks, failing which they will be treated as disqualified.
(iv) The Ph.D degree holders whose Master’s level examination had been completed by 19th September 1991 (irrespective of date of declaration of result) shall be eligible for relaxation of 5% of marks from 55% to 50% to appear in SET Examination.
(v) Candidates have to appear for SET in the subject of their Post Graduation only.
(vi) Candidates should note that their candidature is provisional. The mere fact that an admission card has been issued to a candidate will not imply that the university has finally accepted his/her candidature. Candidate may note that their candidature will be deemed final upon verification of eligibility conditions.
(vii) The UGC is considering the OBC candidates as per the Central List of ’Government of India’ for giving relaxation in NET Examinations, Further, it has been decided that for SET Examinations, which are valid within the respective state, OBC candidates as per the List maintained by the respective state, OBC candidates as per the List maintained by the respective state, may also be allowed to be eligible for relaxation in qualifying marks in SET examination, in addition to the OBC candidates as per the ‘Central List’ maintained by Govt. of India.
(viii) Candidates seek concession in fee are required to submit attested copy of their OBC/SC/ST/PC/VC certificate along with their Application Forms. Other candidates are not required to submit any certificates/documents in support of their eligibility alongwith printout of their Application Form. Therefore, the candidates, in their own interest, must satisfy themselves about their eligibility for the Test. In the event of any ineligibility being detected by the university at any stage, their candidature will be cancelled and they shall be liable for legal action.
3. Age Limit: No upper age limit
4. Exemption (Eligibility for Lectureship)
(i) NET/SLET/SET shall remain the minimum eligibility condition for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professors in Universities/Colleges/Institutions. Provided however, that candidates, who are or have been awarded a Ph.D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulation, 2009 shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment of Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Universities/Colleges/Institution.
(ii) For SET Candidates: The candidates who have cleared the State Eligibility Test (SET) accredited by UGC for eligibility for Lectureship held prior to 1st June 2002 onwards, the qualified candidates are eligible to apply for the post of lecturer only in the universities/colleges belonging to the state from where they have cleared their SET.
5. Examination Fee and Mode of Payment
For General Candidate, the examination fee is Rs. 1000/-, for Other backward classes the fee is Rs. 750/- and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST/Physically Challenged/Visually Challenged.
The fee should be paid in the form of a single crossed bank demand draft from any Nationalised Bank with six months validity drawn in favour of The Registrar, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore-641046 payble at Coimbatore. Fee once paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.
6. Scheme and Date of Test
(i) The test will consist of three papers. All the three papers will be held on Sunday, 14-08-2011 in two separate sessions as mentioned below.
Session: First, Paper: I, Marks: 100, Duration: 09.30 A.M. to 10.45 A.M.
Session: First, Paper: II, Marks: 100, Duration: 10.45 A.M. to 12.00 Noon
Session: Second, Paper: III, Marks: 200, Duration: 01.30 A.M. to 04.00 P.M.
Paper-I will be of general nature intended to assess the teaching/ research aptitude of the candidates. It will primarily be designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidates. Paper-I shall consist of sixty (60) multiple choice questions of two marks each, out of which the candidate would be required to answer only fifty (50). In the event of the candidate attempting more than fifty questions, the first fifty questions attempted by the candidate would be evaluated.
Paper-II shall consist of 50 compulsory objective type questions. The candidate will have to mark their responses for questions of paper-I and paper-II on the optical mark reader (OMR) sheet provided along with the test booklet.
Paper-III will consist of only descriptive questions from the syllabus of the subject selected by the candidates. The Candidates will be required to write answers in the space provided in the test booklet.
A candidate who does not appear in Paper I will not be permitted to appear in paper II and paper III. Paper III will be evaluated only for those candidates who are able to secure the minimum qualifying marks in Paper – I and Paper – II as decided by the appropriate authority.
(ii) Paper-III will be evaluated only for those candidates who are able to secure the minimum qualifying marks in paper-I and Paper-II, as per the table given in the following
Category – General – Paper-I: 40, Paper-II: 40, Paper-I + Paper-II – 100 (50%)
Category – OBC/PC/VC – Paper-I: 35, Paper-II: 35, Paper-I + Paper-II – 90 (45%)
Category – SC/ST – Paper-I: 35, Paper-II: 35, Paper-I + Paper-II – 80 (40%)
(iii) For Visually challenged candidates, thirty minutes extra time shall be provided separately for Paper I and Paper II. For Paper III, forty five minutes extra time shall be provided. They will also be provided with a scribe who should be a graduate in a subject other than that of the candidates
(iv) Syllabus for the Test: Question paper for Paper I is common for all the subjects in which SET is conducted and it will be bi-lingual (English and Tamil). Paper II and Paper III of certain subjects will also be bi-lingual and details are furnished below. The syllabus for Paper I, Paper II and Paper III will not be sent to the candidates by the University. The candidates can download the syllabus by the University. The candidates can download the syllabus of their subjects from the university website: www.b-u.ac.in (or) ugc website: www.ugc.ac.in.
7. Subjects: The SET will be conducted in the following subjects.
Subject code – 01– Chemical Sciences, 02- *Commerce, 03- Computer Science & Appln., 04- *Economics, 05- *Education, 06- Electronics, 07- English, 08- *Geography, 09- Hindi, 10- *History, 11- *Home Science, 12- Journalism & Mass Communication, 13- *Law, 14- *Library and Information Science, 15- Life Sciences, 16- Management, 17- Mathematical Sciences, 18- *Music, 19- Philosophy, 20- Physical Sciences, 22- *Political Sciences, 23- *Psychology, 24- *Public Administration, 25- *Social Work, 26- *Sociology, 27- Tamil.

8. The SET will be held at the following centers.
Center Code and Centre Name – 01- Chennai, 02- Coimbatore, 03- Madurai, 04-Tiruchirappally, 05- Salem, 06- Tirunelveli, 07- Chidambaram, 08- Karaikkudi, 09- Vellore, 10- Puducherry.
No request for change of center will be entertained under any circumstances.
9. How to Apply
1. Candidates seeking admission to the test must apply in the prescribed application form (one copy only) as given in the advertisement. Application form along with the Admission card, Attendance slip and Computer coding sheet may be taken from the advertisement and neatly typed on white paper (A-3 size) in double space and on one side of the paper only. There is no objection to candidates using printed Application Form, if available from private agencies but they should ensure that its format is exactly same as published by the University in its advertisement. The application not in the prescribed format will be rejected. Bharathiar University shall not issue application form for the SET examination and any request in this regard shall not be entertained. The candidate can download the application form from the University website: www.b-u.ac.in
2. The Candidate should fill in the Application form, Attendance slip, Admission card and Computer coding sheet legibly and carefully in their own handwriting by ball point pen. Application form along with admission card, attendance slip, computer coding sheet and demand draft should be sent to the Secretary, SET, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore – 641046. It should be clearly specified on the envelope that the application is for SET Exam.
Admission card and Attendance Slip shall be in separate sheets.
10. Guidelines for Filling up the Application Form:
1. The candidates must affix their recent passport size Photographs at the place indicated in application form. They should sign across the photograph at the top after it is affixed so that part of the signature spreads over the application form beyond the photograph. Besides, it should be duly attested by the Head of the Department (or) Gazetted Officer.
2. In column-8, write SC for Scheduled Caste, ST for Scheduled Tribe, OBC for other backward classes and GEN for all other candidates.
3. In column-9, write VC for Visually Challenged and PC for Physically challenged, others leave it blank.
4. In column-13: Fill in the required details only if the candidate has qualified for / passed PG degree.
5. Candidates who have qualified for the award of PG Degree need not fill in item 16 “Attestation form”. All others such as candidates who are undergoing final year of PG level examinations and awaiting results, who have completed the course of study but having arrears etc. shall fill in Item-16 “Attestation form” of the bottom of the application and get it attested by the Head of the Institution, otherwise it will be rejected.
Enclosures to be sent with the Application: Candidates should sent the following documents with their application:
(i) A crossed Bank Draft towards examination fee payable to “The Registrar, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore” payable at Coimbatore. Candidates should mention their Name, Subject code and Centre code on the reverse of the Demand Draft.
(ii) Copies of Certificate for OBC/SC/ST/Visually Challenged/Physically Challenged as the case may be duly attested by a Gazetted Officer.
(iii) PG level, Marksheet/Certificate attested by a Gazetted Officer.
Check List: Verify the Following before Mailing the Application: Before submission of application, the following points must be checked carefully:-
1. Whether you fulfill the eligibility conditions for the test as prescribed under the Headings “ELIGIBILITY CONDITION”
2. Whether you have filled in all the columns of the application form correctly and no column has been left blank.
3. Whether you have filled in the name of the Subject and Center as well as the respective codes in columns 3 and 4 respectively.
4. Whether you have filled in your CATEGORY STATUS correctly in Column 8 in worlds. viz. SC/ST/GEN/OBC.
5. Confirm whether you have signed in the application form, Admission card, Attendance slip and Computer coding sheet.
