

The University of Allahabad shall conduct the combined research entrance test – 2009
(CRET- 2009) at Allahabad for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) Programme of the university for the session 2009-10 in the subjects specified.
As laid down in the university’s ordinance LVI, candidates for admission to the D.Phil. Programme must hold the master’s degree (or a degree recognized by the university as equivalent thereto) in a relevant subject from the university, or any other university or institution recognized by it, and must fulfill other prescribed conditions of eligibility. Regular teachers of the university of Allahabad and of any institution maintained by it or admitted to its privileges and International students are not required to qualify for D.Phil, admission through CRET-2009. All other candidates for admission to the D.Phil. programme in the concerned subjects are required to appear at CRET-2009 after applying and register their candidatures through the online application and registration process at the website www.auadmission.com and remitting the admissible test fees in the prescribed manner. The details and instructions in respect of CRET-2009, the procedure applicable to the teachers and International students exempt from CRET-2009 and relevant information on the D.Phil.
General Information
All candidates seeking admission to the D.Phil. programme of the university of Allahabad for the session 2009-10, shall have to qualify in the common research entrance test (CRET-2009) to be conducted by the university at Allahabad only.
CRET-2009 shall have three levels (level 1, level 2 and level 3) of testing/assessment. The level 1 test (multiple choices objective type test for assessing general awareness, academic aptitude and subject proficiency) and the level 2 test (subjective test for assessing subject expertise and research aptitude) shall be by means of written tests, to be conducted centrally by the university. The level 3 Test shall entail an Interview and may include presentations, group discussions or other modes of appraisal and shall be administered by the Doctoral programme committee of the department/institute/ centre concerned.
Candidates who have qualified the national education test (NET) of the university grants commission (UGC) shall be exempt from the level 1 test.
The following categories of candidates shall be exempt from the level 1 and level 2 tests, both - all candidates selected by the UGC or the council of scientific and industrial research (CSIR) for their junior research fellowship (JRF), subject to the validity norms of the respective fellowship.
Candidates for D.Phil. in the department of electronics and communication with M.Tech. in electronics engineering (or equivalent subjects). Candidates for D.Phil. in the department of earth and planetary sciences with M.Tech. in Geology/Applied Geology or Geo-Physics (or equivalent subjects). Candidates for D.Phil. in the department of earth and planetary sciences with M.Sc. in Geology/Applied Geology or Geo-Physics (or equivalent subjects) who have qualified GATE not more than 12 months before the last date of applying for CRET and have a GATE Score of not less than 75%.
There shall be negative marking in objective-type questions, in pursuance of which a deduction shall be made for each incorrect answer at the rate of 25% of the marks assigned to the question.
Reservation shall be implemented, as per UGC directions and guidelines, at the rate of 15% for the SC, 7.5% for the ST and 27% for the OBC categories. Horizontal reservation shall be extended, across the reserved and unreserved (i.e. general) categories, at the overall rate of 3% for the (PH/VH) candidates in accordance with the legal provisions in this regard.
A candidate who fails to obtain the minimum qualifying marks for the concerned category at the level 1 test shall stand disqualified and his answer-book for the level 2 test will not be evaluated. A candidate who fails to obtain the prescribed minimum qualifying marks for the concerned category at the level 2 test or, having secured the minimum qualifying marks separately at the level 1 and level 2 tests, fails to obtain the aggregate minimum qualifying marks for the concerned category on the aggregate total score of the level 1 and level 2 tests will stand disqualified for the level 3 test.
Regularly appointed teachers of the university (including university institutes and Independent centres) or of any constituent Institute or constituent college of the University, desirous of admission to the D.Phil. programme in their respective subjects, should submit, on or before the last date notified for the on-line applications for
CRET-2009, their application on the (priced) application form prescribed for the D.Phil. Programme, in the manner specified in the proviso to clause l(c) of the University’s ordinance LVI (the doctor of Philosophy programme),to the Registrar. The Registrar shall record these forms and forward them to the Head of the concerned department (in the case of teachers of a Department of the University or of a constituent college) or to the Director of the concerned Institute (in the case of teachers of a University Institute or a
Constituent Institute). The teachers concerned shall be directly interviewed by the concerned Doctoral programme committee at the time of the level 3 test of the candidates qualifying CRET-2009
International students seeking admission to the D.Phil. programme should contact the
International students advisor of the university, who shall issue appropriate instructions to such of them as fulfill the qualifications for being considered for admission to the D.Phil. programme. The cases of International students are subject to the provisions of the third proviso to clause 1(a)(iii) of the University’s ordinance LVI. The process and schedule for the admission of International students may be different from that for the candidates qualifying CRET-2009.
All candidates (except the regularly appointed teachers and International students, including candidates exempt from the level 1 test or the level 1 and level 2 tests, both should apply to the Director, CRET-2009 through the online application and registration process.
All candidates, including candidates exempt from the level 1 test or the level 1 and level 2 tests, both, shall be required to fulfill the following eligibility criteria for appearing in CRET-2009 and for admission to the D.Phil. programme
A minimum score at the post-graduate examination of 55% marks (or the equivalent letter grade/grade point under the seven point letter grade scale), laid down by the UGC in the case of general/OBC candidates; or 50% marks (or the equivalent letter grade/
grade point) in the case of SC /ST/PH/VH candidates.
A minimum average score in the entire academic career of 54% marks (or the equivalent letter grade/grade point) in the case of general/OBC candidates; or 49% marks (or the equivalent letter grade/grade point) in the case of SC/ST/PH/VH candidates.
Not more than one III division (or equivalent letter grade/grade point) in the academic career before graduation.
With effect from the Session 2009-10, all admissions to the D.Phil. Programme shall initially be on provisional basis and the admitted candidates shall be required to attend and attain the minimum requisite standards in the prescribed pre-doctoral programme. The course fees for the pre-doctoral programme shall be chargeable to the contingency grant of candidates in receipt of a fellowship/scholarship/other stipend.
Final admission to the D.Phil. programme shall be granted to the candidate only upon the successful completion of the pre-doctoral programme of the duration of one semester. The enrolment of a candidate who fails to qualify for such final admission shall stand terminated ab initio.
No candidate admitted to and enrolled in the D.Phil. programme shall be entitled to continue in, or accept, any remunerative assignment during the period of enrolment in the programme, other than a fellowship/scholarship/other stipend awarded for pursuing the programme. No candidate admitted to and enrolled in the D.Phil. programme shall be entitled to continue in, or join, any other degree course or any whole-time diploma/ certificate course of the university or of any other university/Institution/Authority. However, he/she may be permitted (or required) to join a part-time or add-on diploma/ certificate course, in accordance with the provisions of ordinance LVI and other relevant ordinances of the university.

The University reserves the right to withdraw any of the subjects specified from CRET-2009 without assigning any reason. The candidate is advised to satisfy himself/ herself of the admissibility of the subject of his/her post-graduation for the purposes of appearing with a particular subject at CRET-2009.
In case any question arises regarding the admissibility of the subject of a candidate at the Post Graduate examination for the purposes of appearing with a particular subject at CRET 2009, the CRET-2009 committee shall take a final decision on the recommendation of the Doctoral programme committee concerned, and such decision shall be binding on the candidate.
A candidate eligible to appear at the level 3 test of CRET-2009, who is desirous of pursuing research in an inter-disciplinary area in which an approved D.Phil. programme is offered by a department/centre or an Institute, may, with the separately granted permissions of the CRET-2009 committee and the relevant Doctoral programme committee (DPC), both, appear for the level-3 test for the said inter-disciplinary area, only if the subject of his Post-Graduation is approved for the purposes of admission of D.Phil. programme in the concerned inter-disciplinary area. In such a case, the candidate shall be required to submit, in original, the certificate of eligibility, issued by CRET 2009 committee, along with other requisite documentation to such DPC for the concerned inter-disciplinary area.
The online application and registration process, schedule and test fees for CRET-2009
A candidate who fulfils the minimum eligibility criteria, and seeks to appear in CRET-2009 in a subject that is available and is also admissible to him / her, must complete, and submit through the Internet, as per modality and schedule, the prescribed on-line application/registration form for appearing for the level 1 test / level 2 test / level 3 test (as the case may be) at CRET-2009 in the concerned / admissible subject, and must remit, within due time, the admissible test fees to the university.
The on-line application / registration form for CRET-2009 shall be accessible only during the dates specified in the schedule at the university’s special website for CRET, http://www.auadmission.com. The candidate has to fill and submitthe form on-line, in accordance with the instructions given in the said website.
The form shall not be accessible at the website after the last date of accessibility given in the schedule. Before proceeding to fill and submit the on-line application / registration form for CRET- 2009, the candidate is strongly advised to carry out the following tasks for his/her own convenience. Take a print-out of this bulletin (information and guidelines) and read it carefully. Take a print-out of the CRET-2009 syllabus of the subject in which he / she desires, and is eligible, to appear. Read thoroughly the Instructions for the filling and submission of the on-line form. Review and ensure the correctness of the details of his/her academic record at the High school and Intermediate (or equivalent) and the Graduation and Post-graduation level, for purposes of making required entries in the on-line form. Get his / her latest passport-size colour photograph scanned by computer, so that the scanned photograph can be submitted with the on-line form. The original of the scanned photograph should be carefully preserved for submission to the CRET-2009 committee. If the candidate does not already have an e-mail address (e-mail ID), he /she should create for himself / herself a valid e-mail ID, in order that the CRET-2009 committee may send him / her significant instructions or information (as per need) by e-mail. The candidate is entitled to appear in only one Subject at CRET-2009. The candidate is also prohibited from submitting more than one on-line application /registration form for CRET-2009. In case the candidate submits more than one on-line form, all the forms submitted by him shall stand cancelled.

Test fees for candidates required to appear for (level 1, level 2 and level 3 tests) or (level 2 and level 3 tests): General/OBC Rs. 700/-, SC/ST/PH Rs 350/-
Test fees for candidates exempt from the level 1 and level 2 tests, and required to appear only for the level 3 test: General/OBC Rs. 350/-, SC/ST/PH Rs. 175/-
It should be noted that the test fees shall not be refunded or carried over in case the application of the candidate is rejected, or his / her candidature is rendered infructuous or cancelled at any stage, or he / she does not appear wholly or partially for CRET-2009.
The candidate has to separately remit the prescribed test fees, for the amount specified for his / her category, by a demand draft (Bank draft) of any nationalized bank, drawn in favour of Director CRET-2009, University of Allahabad, and payable at Allahabad. The candidate should cross the demand draft, and write his / her full name, father’s name and the subject in which he / she is to appear at CRET-2009 and Application ID generated upon successful submission of the online registration form, on the reverse (back) lower left-hand corner of the demand draft. The candidate should also get photo-copies (Xerox) made of the two sides of the demand draft, and keep them secure for his / her own reference and record.
The structure of CRET-2009
Level 1 test: This test is of objective type questions and it is divided into two sections – Section A and Section B. Negative Marking for wrong answers is applicable for level 1
test.
Section A: General Awareness, Academic and Research Aptitude: This Section of the paper will comprise of 60 multiple choice questions out of which only 50 questions are to be attempted. Each question will carry 2 marks. Duration of this section will be 01:30 hours.
Section B: Subject proficiency in the CRET 2009 subject applied for: This section will comprise of 50 multiple choices type objective questions of the subject opted by the candidate. All questions are to be attempted. Each question carries 2 marks. Duration of this Section will be 01:30 hours
Note - Test for level 1 – section A and level 1 – section B will be in continuation. Candidates will not be allowed to leave the examination room in between the two sections. Immediately after completion of section A duration, i.e. 1:30 hours, the question/ answer booklet for section A will be collected and simultaneously question booklet and answer sheet for section B will be distributed. Total duration of level 1 test (level 1A and level 1B) is 3 hours.
Level 2 (written subject tests): This test is of subjective type based on the subject of CRET 2009 opted by the candidate in its online registration and eligibility.
The duration of level 2 (written subject test) of CRET-2009 shall be three hours and the total marks shall be 200. This test will comprise of 3 sections consisting of short answer, medium answer and long answer questions.
General Instructions
The university reserves the right to declare the number of eligible candidates in each subject in accordance with the relevant ordinances and the present reservation policy of the University. However, admission to D.Phil. programme will be finalized on the basis of the availability of seats and supervisors in the concerned Department/Centre/Institute.
The list of eligible candidates for level 3 (Interview) by the concerned DPC shall be sent to the concerned Department/Centre/Institute. The eligible candidates (including JRFs) shall contact the concerned Department/Centre/Institute for further instructions and final selection for admission to its D.Phil. Programme.
A certificate of eligibility issued by the Director, CRET-2009 to the eligible candidates, shall be sent together with the list of eligible candidates to the concerned department for distribution to the students. This will support the eligibility of the candidate for admission to D.Phil. programme of the concerned/allied subject and shall be submitted in original with the prescribed application form of the University to be filled and submitted for Level 3. (Interview) to the concerned DPC
No weightage shall be admissible to the candidates on their written subject test score of CRET-2009. All eligible candidates including JRFs will be treated at par for the level-3 test.
Interview: Candidates found eligible for level-3 (Interview) shall be required to contact the concerned/allied departments/centre/institute. They shall fill the form prescribed by the University of Allahabad, for admission to its D.Phil. programme and appear before the DPC of the subject for interview and other formalities as desired by the concerned DPC. Their admission shall be finalized by concerned DPC depending on the availability of seats and supervisors.
A candidate desirous of pursuing inter-disciplinary research shall be permitted to apply for level 3 of CRET 2009 in any one of the allied subjects for which the certificate of eligibility shall have to be submitted in original with the prescribed application form.
Important instructions to the candidates
Every candidate must carry his/her admit card for being permitted to appear for the concerned test(s) of CRET-2009.
Every candidate must sit on his / her marked seat as per the roll number allotted.
No candidate shall be allowed to enter the examination hall after 15 minutes of the commencement of the test.
No candidate will be allowed to leave the examination hall till the end of the test.
Calculators/mobile phones/pagers etc. shall not be allowed within the premises of the examination centre.
All candidates are required to retain the admit cards after the test for presenting it at the time of level 3 (Interview) before the concerned DPC and final admission to the D.Phil, programme of the University.
Eligible candidates at level 2 are required to collect eligibility certificate from the concerned department/centre/institute. The certificate has to be submitted in original along with the prescribed application/registration form for level 3 (Interview).
