Was scrapping the Tamilnadu CET a wise decision ?

It doesnot seems to be - that is what Chennai Online Reports

The Tamilnadu Govt's decion on the scrapping of the TNPCEE or the Common Entrance Test has its fall out....The failure rate in the first year exams of the constituent engineering colleges of the Anna University is alarming which is pegged at nearly 30% which normally hovers around 3 to 4% reports Chennaionline.com

The results which were just published a few days ago proved this alarming failure rate. The delay is publishing the results of the November examinations which normally is published during mid February is attributed to software collapse.

However insiders say that it is the failure rate which pushed the results to be published in mid April.

The prestigious colleges under the umbrella of the Anna University in Chennai - College of Engineering, Guindy, the Madras Institute of Technology and the Alagappa College of Technology - which are famous for excellent results are in a piquant situation.

The academia says that the CET tests the ability of the students by application oriented questions and filtered the students. The present batch of rote learning students from the best schools in the state with high scores were unable to cope with the engineering syllabus and were unable to answer the application oriented questions in the examinations.

The faculty attributed the majority failure in engineering mathematics which is a nightmare for many students, had analytical questions and even the students who had high scores in Mathematics in Plus 2 failed because of rote learning.

The educationists in the state says, "No doubt , that the students should be given equal opportunities bridging the urban and rural divide but not at the cost of the quality professional education or else change the syllabus for higher secondary to match with the application oriented education.”

The academia feels that in the guise of providing equal opportunities to students the Government has scrapped the CET, but many high scoring students could not cope up with the demanding engineering syllabus thereby the morale of the students have come down resulting in high failure rate.

Educationists feel that the government should reconsider its decision and conduct the CET so that the quality of engineering and professional education is maintained.
