State-owned Public Sector (PSU) banks are on a recruitment drive to hire clerical staff and officers.

State Bank of India (SBI) Recently advertised for hiring 20,000 clerical staff across India. Corporation Bank and Allahabad Bank and Bank of Maharashra have also advertised for Probationary Officers, clerks and other Officers. Other banks like Union Bank of India (UBI) and Bank of India (BoB), too, are planning to hire in the range of 1,000 employees, while other banks like Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) and Bank of Baroda (BoB) are in the process accessing the staff requirement.

But unlike the past, they are not looking for pen pushers. Instead, they want employees to go out and cross sell other financial products. reports the Economic Times. The news report says... While in the past, clerical employees were required to sit behind a desk and make entries in the bank ledger, the new age staff are required to go out and sell. “The new recruits must have flair for marketing and will be required to make customer calls and provide banking services, advisory services and cross-sell products inside and outside bank premises.

The duties involve extensive outdoor travelling. Depending upon requirement, there will be flexible working hours and working in shifts,” a recruitment advertisement by SBI said. The country’s largest bank has about 1.5 lakh clerical staff on its payroll and about 50,000 officers.

SBI, which provides various financial services like mutual funds, life insurance and broking services, is looking to increasing its reach by cross-selling products to its existing customers. Further, the bank is also looking at entering into various other businesses like general insurance and custodian service for which they would require to expand the employee base.

Other public sector banks are also hiring since a huge chunk of employees will reach super annuation in 2008-09. This is because government-owned banks had gone in for massive recruitment in the early 70s. Senior officials from Bank of India said that they are looking at hiring 500 people for clerical cadre and another 1,000 as officers in the year 2009.
