NCERT Class 10, 12 Books Shortage

NCERT blames states for shortage of books

The Delhi High Court has directed the NCERT to make textbooks of all classes, including 10th and 12th, available by June end.

The National Council for Education, Research and Training (NCERT) has attributed the shortage of text books to the sudden increase in demand by seven states.
In its reply filed to the Delhi High Court late last week, the NCERT said, "Sudden increase of demands of books is because of the fact that Haryana, Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, Goa, Kerala, Sikkim and Himachal Pradesh introduced NCERT books in the schools run by the state boards."

The order came on a petition alleging that the government body was not providing books in time to students studying under the CBSE syllabus.

Disposing the petition, the court directed the NCERT to take immediate action against publishers of pirated books.

The NCERT’s counsel submitted that the body had already registered complaints against three such publishers who were allegedly involved in piracy.

The counsel also contended that the NCERT is printing 4.98 crore copies for the current 2007-08 session against a print run of 2.75 crore copies in the previous session of 2006-07.

It further said that it has already published and distributed 3.20 crore copies nationwide.
