What are the different steps to appear for IAS Civil Services Exam? How to Crack it?

Answer:

The Indian Administrative Service is one of 32 government civil services, for which entry is through a rigorous selection process. More than 3 lakh students around the country take the entrance exam, but barely 300-400 are finally selected for all the services. This year, the number has been raised to 1,000, but only the first 100 successful candidates can choose the service they want. So, you must be prepared to work in any of the civil services, not just IAS.

To qualify in the civil services exam, you need to be an above average student and extremely hard-working. You can start preparing during graduation, and subjects like political science are useful. Keep in mind that you need detailed academic knowledge of least two subjects for the exam. The complete list of subjects is given in the UPSC website www.upsc.gov.in.

The civil services exam is held in two phases – the preliminary exam (May/June) is of two papers on general studies, and an optional subject from a list of around 22 subjects. Those who clear this are called for the mains (November/December), which consist of eight papers.

The main exam comprises two language papers, one in English and the other in an optional Indian language, two general studies papers, and four papers on two optional subjects.

These papers are all subjective or essay type papers. The general studies papers cover topics related to current events of national and international importance, Indian history and geography, as well as topics in general science.

Those who pass this test qualify for the final stage, which is an oral interview that enables an expert panel to judge first-hand not only the intellectual qualities of the candidate, but also his/her social skills, mental alertness, and above all, leadership and moral integrity. Entry into any of the 32 different civil services is made on the basis of your options and the ranking in the civil services exam.

Specialized coaching for all the three stages of the civil services examination is given by several institutes, many of which also offer postal or online coaching. They offer study material, sample papers, syllabus for the exams and so on.

Employment news carries information on the civil services exam, as do guide books and various websites. You must also read at least one newspaper from cover to cover every day, and a range of national and international magazines to stay informed of the latest developments in politics, international relations, science and technology and sports.
