Applications are invited for admission to Ph.D degree from non-stipendiary candidates for full-time/ part-time programme in the departments of the university, colleges affiliated to this university and recognized research institutions for July 2010 session

To facilitate a time bound approach admission to Ph.D programme, admission is made four times in a year (i.e.) in January, April, July and October of every calendar year. Candidates should submit their applications on the first working day of a quarter viz January, April, July and October

The teachers from university departments/affiliated colleges are also informed that they should apply for admission to Ph.D programme in the above sessions only

Candidates with fellowships from funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, GATE etc and project fellows could register at any time of the year. Candidates belonging to SC/ST are exempted from payment of application cost, as well as registration fees subject to the production of two copies of community certificate duly attested by a Gazetted officer. A superscription as for SC/ST candidates only is made on such application forms

Eligibility: A candidate should obtained a master’s degree with not less than 55% marks or equivalent grade. In the case of examinations, where classification does not exist, a minimum of 55% marks is needed in the qualifying examination. For SC/ST candidates and all other candidates who have completed the PG degree before 1991, the minimum will be only 50% for admission to the Ph.D programme

 








A candidate should pass an entrance examination (written and oral) administered by duly constituted committee of the department in the university or of an affiliated college where the candidate proposes to undergo Ph.D programme

Part-time: A teacher working in the department of the university or of an affiliated college of the university or Higher secondary school or High school or Polytechnic within the territorial jurisdiction and with a qualifying degree fulfilling the above eligibility can apply

Teachers of affiliated colleges holding NET/SLET qualification or M.Phil degree with one year of teaching experience after M.Phil degree and teachers of Higher secondary school/High school and Polytechnic with two years experience after the qualifying degree shall be allowed to register for Ph.D (part-time) programme

A candidate employed other than as a teacher in a permanent job, within the territorial jurisdiction of this university with a minimum of four years of total working experience put in after the qualifying degree and satisfying the rules framed separately by the Syndicate from time to time with the above eligibility can apply

Application forms (both permission and registration) can be had from the university enquiry office on payment of Rs 500/- by way of an account payee demand draft from any nationalized bank drawn in favour of the registrar, university of Madras, Chennai-600005 along with requisition letter. Postal order and money order will not be accepted. Self addressed stamped envelope for Rs 55/- should accompany the requisition for application form through post

Filled in application (application form for admission to Ph.D programme only) along with attested Xerox copies of all the certificates should be sent directly to the Head of the Department of the University/ Principal of the college/director of research institution concerned and not to the registrar, university of Madras

The date of issue of application is 1st June to 30th June, 2010 for July session; 1st September 2010 to 30th September, 2010 for October 2010 session; 1st December 2010 to 31st December 2010 for January 2011 session and 1st March, 2011 to 31st March, 2011 for April 2011 session

The last date for receipt of filled-in applications is 1st July 2010 for July session, 1st October 2010 for October session, 1st January 2011 for January session, 1st April 2011 for April session

The university reserves the right not to conduct any of the above courses, if the circumstances so warrant
