COCHIN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
ACADEMIC ADMISSIONS: 2006
Applications are invited from eligible applicants for admission to the following academic programmes for the year 2006-2007. Academic admissions are based on Common Admission Test (CAT)/Departmental Admission Test (DAT)/Test for Lateral Entry and all applicants intending to apply for any of the academic programmes are required to submit their applications to the University. Applicants who have appeared/are appearing for their final qualifying examinations are also eligible to apply. Degrees obtained through distance education programmes other than through IGNOU are not recognized by the regulations of the University in force. The CAT will be conducted on 29th (For 1st Degree Programmes) & 30th (For PG Programmes) of April, 2006 with centres at all district head quarters in Kerala, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkatta, Kota, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, Patna, Ranchi, Varanasi and overseas centres at Dubai & Saudi Arabia. The DATs are conducted at Kochi by the individual Departments/Schools of the University on dates to be announced later.
The University reserves the right to cancel any or all the notified Test-Centres for administrative reasons.
Application forms for all programmes listed hereunder are supplied along with the Academic Hand Book (AHB) and can be obtained as indicated at 5 below.
1. ADMISSIONS THROUGH CAT
Applicants for the following programmes are required to take the CAT, except where specifically indicated otherwise:
1.1 FIRST DEGREE PROGRAMMES
a. B.Tech. in Civil Engg.**, Computer Science & Engg.**, Electrical & Electronics Engg.**, Electronics & Communication Engg.**, Information Technology**, Mechanical Engg.**, Safety & Fire Engg.**.

c. Five Year Integrated M.Sc. in Photonics
Pass in Plus Two Examination of the State of Kerala with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.
d. B.Tech. in Instrumentation
Pass in Plus Two examination of the State of Kerala with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto securing a minimum of 60% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together, with at least 55% in Mathematics separately.
e. B.Tech. in Marine Engg.. ** (Residential Programme)
1) Pass in Plus Two or equivalent examination with physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English as separate subjects with a PCM average of not less than 60% marks and should have obtained 50% marks in English at 10th and 12th standards.
2) The Maximum age limit prescribed is 20 years as on 1st October 2006.
f. B.Tech. in Naval Architecture & Ship Building.
Pass in Plus Two examination of the State of Kerala or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto with a First Class securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics as well as for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together.
g. 5 Year LL.B.* (Hons.)
1. Pass in Plus Two examination with 60% marks in Science / Commerce group or 55% marks in Arts / Humanities. 2. Should not have completed 21 years of age on 1st January of the year of admission.
1.2 POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Bachelor's degree in Law with at least 45% marks.
M.A. Hindi Language and Literature
B.A./B.Sc. degree with Hindi as a subject of study with at least 45% marks in Hindi.
M.B.A. (Full-time / Part-time) offered by CUSAT and its recognized institutions.
A degree in any subject with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.
M.B.E. (Master of Business Economics)
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in any subject including Engg., Technology, Agriculture and Medicine with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks.
M.T.T.M. (Master of Travel and Tourism Management)**
A degree in any subject with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.
M.C.A.*** offered by CUSAT and its recognized institutions.
Any graduate with Mathematics as one of the main or subsidiary subjects or graduate in Electronics/Computer Science/Computer Applications / Engg./ Technology with aggregate 55% marks in all subjects other than Languages and Humanities.
M.I.B. (Master of International Business)
A degree in any subject with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate.
M.Sc. Applied Chemistry
B.Sc. degree with Chemistry/Polymer Chemistry/Environmental Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry/Petrochemicals as main, with Mathematics as one of the subsidiary subjects with at least 55% marks in the main subject.
M.Sc. Biotechnology
Bachelor's degree in any branch of Life Sciences including Agricultural and Medical Science or Chemical Science or Chemical Engg. with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.
M.Sc. Electronic Science
First class B.Sc. / B.Sc. (Hons..) degree with not less than 60% aggregate marks in Electronics, Computer Science, or Physics (with Electronics). Candidates with higher degrees are not eligible for admission.
M.Sc. Environmental Technology
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry with Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries, or Engg. (Civil/Public Health/Environmental or Chemical) or Life Sciences or Environmental Sciences or Zoology or Botany or Microbiology with at least 55% marks in the optional subjects.
M.Sc. Hydrochemistry
B.Sc. degree with Chemistry as the main subject and Physics and Mathematics as subsidiaries with 55% marks in Chemistry or B.Sc. degree of any University in Kerala with Polymer Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry/Petro Chemicals/Environment & Water Management as the main subject and Mathematics and Physics/Computer Science, as subsidiaries with 55% marks in the main subject.
M.Sc. Industrial Fisheries
Bachelor's degree in Zoology/Botany/Fisheries /Chemistry main with Zoology and Botany as subsidiaries with at least 55% marks in the optional subjects. Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries includes bachelor’s degree in Industrial Fisheries, Aquaculture and Fishery Science.
M.Sc. Marine Biology
B.Sc. degree with any branch of Life Sciences such as Aquaculture, Bio-chemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology as a main subject or B.Sc. degree in Fisheries Science with atleast 55% marks in the optional subjects.
M.Sc. Marine Geology
Bachelor's degree in Geology with at least 55% aggregate marks for optionals.
M.Sc. Marine Geophysics
B.Sc. degree with at least 55% aggregate marks in Geology (main) with Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry as subsidiaries / Physics (main) with Mathematics and Geology or Chemistry or Electronics as subsidiaries / Mathematics (main) with Physics and Geology or Chemistry as subsidiaries.
M.Sc. Mathematics
B.Sc. degree with Mathematics main, with at least 55% marks for optional subjects taken together.
M.Sc. Meteorology
B.Sc. degree with Physics/Mathematics as the main subject with 55% marks. Those with Mathematics as the main subject should have studied Physics as one of the subsidiary subjects and vice-versa.
M.Sc. Oceanography
B.Sc. degree with Physics/Mathematics as the main subject with 55% marks. Those with Mathematics as the main subject should have studied Physics as one of the subsidiary subjects and vice-versa.
M.Sc. Physics
B.Sc. degree with Physics main and Mathematics as subsidiary with at least 55% marks in Physics.
M.Sc. Statistics
B.Sc. degree in Mathematics or Statistics with atleast 55% marks for optional subjects taken together.
2. M. Tech. PROGRAMMES
Admissions to the following M.Tech. programmes are based on valid GATE score as prescribed under the academic regulations specific to each programme. Candidates not possessing GATE may also apply, but will be considered only if GATE qualified candidates are not available. In such cases, admissions will be based on the DAT.
M.Tech. Atmospheric Science
1. M.Sc. degree or its equivalent in Meteorology, Oceanography, Mathematics, Physics, Space Physics with a First Class (60%) marks from any recognized university or institution.
2. A valid GATE score.
M.Tech. Computer Aided Structural Analysis & Design
1. B.Tech or Equivalent degree in Naval Architecture and Ship building/Civil Engg./Mechanical Engg. with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or institution.

M.Tech. Computer & Information Science
1. B.Tech or equivalent degree in any discipline/AMIETE/AMIE or M.Sc. in Physics with Electronics as special subject, or M.Sc. in Mathematics with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or institution.

M.Tech. Engineering Statistics
1. B.Tech or equivalent degree/AMIE in any discipline with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized University or Institution. The candidate can use the same application form available in the designated Post Offices listed in the notification and the Programme Code for the course is "ESTA".
2. A valid GATE score.
M.Tech. Industrial Catalysis
1. M.Sc. degree in Chemistry/Applied Chemistry or any other degree recognized as equivalent with at least a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or institution.

M.Tech. Ocean Technology
1. M.Sc. degree in Oceanography/Physics/Marine Geology/Meteorology/Marine Geophysics/Environmental Sciences or M.Sc (Tech) degree in Marine Geophysics or B.Tech. or equivalent degree /AMIE in Civil Engg./Environmental Sciences with 60% marks from any recognized university or institution.

M.Tech. Opto-Electronics & Laser Technology
1. Masters degree in Physics/Electronics or B.Tech. or equivalent degree/AMIE/AMIETE in Electronics and Communication Engg./Electronics Engg./Electrical Engg. with a First Class (60%) from any recognized university or Institution.
2. A valid GATE score.
M.Tech. Polymer Technology
1. B.Tech. or equivalent degree/AMIE in Polymer Science and Rubber Technology/Chemical Engg. /Technology or M.Sc. Polymer Chemistry/M.Sc. Chemistry with Polymer Chemistry as specialization with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or institution.
2. A valid GATE score.
M.Tech. Software Engg.
1. B.Tech or equivalent degree or AMIE/AMIETE in Computer Science/Information Technology or M.Sc. in Computer Software/Operations Research & Computer Applications or MCA with a first class (60%) marks from any recognized university or institution.

3. ADMISSIONS THROUGH DAT
Applicants for the following programmes are required to take the DAT:
3.1 POST GRADUATE PROGRAMME
M.A. Translation (German/Russian)
Bachelor's degree of any recognized University and knowledge of the language concerned upto Diploma level.
3.2 DIPLOMA/CERTIFICATE PROGRAMMES (PART-TIME)
a. Certificate courses in French/German/Japanese/Russian.
b. Diploma in Functional Arabic
c. Integrated Diploma in French/German/Japanese/ Russian
Pass in Plus-two or equivalent. Previous knowledge in the language concerned is not essential.

Bachelors Degree in any discipline or equivalent recognized by the University with English as one of the subjects of study.

3.3 DIPLOMA PROGRAMME (FULL-TIME)
P.G. Diploma in Coastal Zone Management.
Bachelor’s degree in Engg./Master’s degree in Science from any university recognized by CUSAT with atleast 55% marks.
3.4 M.Phil. PROGRAMMES (FULL-TIME)
M.Phil. Chemistry, Commerce, Hindi and Physics
Master’s degree in the concerned subject with at least 50% marks.
M.Phil. Applied Economics
Master’s degree in Economics with at least 50% aggregate marks.

Master's degree in Marine Biology/Zoology/ any branch of Life sciences such as Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, Bio Chemistry, Biotechnology, Botany, Fishery science with 60% marks.
M.Phil. Photonics
M.Sc. degree with 55% marks in Physics/Electronic Science
3.5 M.E By Research : (FULL-TIME and PART-TIME)
Bachelor’s degree in appropriate branch of Engg. from a recognized University with 60% marks in the qualifying examination and with 50% marks in the DAT.
3.6 Ph.D PROGRAMMES
Ph.D programmes are offered in all the teaching Departments/Schools and recognized Institutions of the University. Candidates are advised to ascertain the areas of research and the availability of vacancies from the Departments/Schools or Recognized Institutions before-hand. Candidates intending to do research in the Recognized Institutions of the University are to obtain application forms from the University Departments/Schools dealing with the discipline of their choice.

4. LATERAL ENTRY TO B.Tech. PROGRAMMES
Admissions to the III Semester B.Tech. Engg. programmes through Lateral Entry Scheme are based on a separate Test to be conducted at Kochi on a date to be announced later.

5.2 Applicants under the NRI Quota should purchase the application form from the post offices listed above and submit the filled up application along with a Demand Draft (DD) for US $ 100 issued by a First Class bank. DDs issued by Exchange Companies/Private Banks will not be accepted. Seats are reserved for NRI candidates only against the self-financing Engg. programmes. Applicants under NRI quota will be automatically considered under the general quota also.
5.3 Foreign Nationals can obtain application forms by post or in person from The Director, IRAA Unit, CUSAT on submission of a DD for US $ 100 issued by a First Class bank. DDs issued by Exchange Companies/Private Banks will not be accepted. Foreign Nationals should obtain the required clearance from the appropriate Ministries of the Government of India.
5.4 Application forms for programmes listed under 3.2 and 3.3 are available as indicated below on payment of Rs. 100/- (Rs. 50/- for SC/ST) by way of a DD. Requests for application forms by post should be supported by a DD for Rs. 180/- (130/- for SC/ST).

5.5 Application forms for programmes listed under 3.4, 3.5 and 3.6 are available only from the respective Departments/Schools on payment of Rs.700/- (Rs.350/- for SC/ST) by way of a DD. Requests for application forms by post should be addressed to the respective Heads of Departments and supported by a DD for Rs. 780/- (Rs. 430/- for SC/ST).
5.6 Application forms for Lateral Entry to B.Tech. can be obtained from The Director, IRAA Unit, CUSAT, Kochi-22 by submission of a DD for Rs. 300/- (Rs. 150/- for SC/ST). Requests for application forms by post should be supported by a DD for Rs. 380/- (Rs. 230/- for SC/ST).
5.7 Candidates, other than those applying under NRI quota, opting for the test centre at Dubai or Saudi Arabia are to remit an additional amount of Rs. 3000/- by way of a DD and submit the same along with the filled up application.
5.8 All Demand Drafts, except those in US $, are to be drawn in favour of The Registrar, CUSAT and made payable at State Bank of Travancore, Cochin University Campus Branch (Code - 70235). Demand Drafts in US $ are to be drawn in favour of The Registrar, CUSAT.
The address of the applicant is to be necessarily noted on the reverse side of the DD.
6. RETURN OF FILLED UP APPLICATION
Filled up application forms may be returned to The Director , IRAA Unit, CUSAT, Kochi-682 022 or can be submitted at any of the Post Offices listed above on or before the last date prescribed for receipt of applications for free transmission to CUSAT by Speed Post. Application forms found incomplete in any respect and / or received after the last date will be summarily rejected.
